Update on Luis - roller coaster ride

Luis is doing well. He has been moved out of the ICU and onto the regular surgical floor where the nurses are less attentive. That means that both he and I have to be more vigilant to make sure that he is getting everything looked after and getting all the meds he is supposed to get.

He had another rough night. He started running a fever in the middle of the night, up to 102.5. They couldn't figure out why. At 5 am he was sent for X-rays. The fellow came in and discovered that his NG tube was not functioning properly because the nurse had not connected it right when they moved him. No one thought to flush it. then around 9 am they took him for a CAT scan and made him drink barium. Thankfully, the surgeon was there watching him and made sure everything was ok. The tests showed that his right lung is still partially collapsed but not leaking in any way. He also still has some blood clots and other mucous that needs to be cleaned out. So, he needs to continue to do his breathing exercises and taking his nebulizer treatments. His temp is back to normal now too.

His pain is still being well managed and the surgeon checks on him frequently. His attitude continues to be good. He is continuing to walk as much as he can. The walks are getting longer and faster but he still won't win any races! So, all in all, pretty good for day 3.

Terry, Luis said he was afraid of waking up during the surgery itself and also of strange dreams. I think he was also a little afraid of not waking up at all. None of those things happened, so he was relieved about that.

Jeff, I would characterize the care at Fox Chase as good. As at any work place, some people are better than others. We had a fabulous nurse in the ICU whose name was Lindsay. She was constantly on top of things and checking everything she was supposed to. She was the one who fought to get the pain meds changed and get his pain controlled. We have also had some who are not so good. One respiratory therapist told Luis he should spit. Also had an aide who brought a menu around LOL! The surgeon has been fabulous and I would recommend him to anyone. He is constantly on top of things and even called the first night at 3 am after a 10 hour surgery! The nursing staff moves when he talks. I think they are all afraid of him!

Luis is still not supposed to take anything by mouth. His barium swallow is supposed to be on day 6 after surgery. That would be Monday. Because of the holiday, I'm guessing it will be Tuesday. The NG tube and the chest tubes should come out after that.

I'm going to bring the kids to see him tomorrow. My mom is staying with them and helping out. They are 8 and 13. Our 18 year old started college last week and seems very self absorbed. Can't wait until he gets over being 18!

Everyone stay strong and focused! We are pulling for you all!

    Thanks
    Laura,

Thanks for the update. Sounds like things are pretty much going as they should. I imagine with a massive surgery like this, there's bound to be a few bumps in the road.I'm keeping Luis in my prayers for a quick recovery and you also for strength and peace. I imagine you haven't had that much rest over the last 3 days. Keep the chin up......it should only get better from here on out.

    So pleased!
    Laura,

So pleased to hear that Luis is doing well and it sounds like you are getting great care from a very skilled surgeon. Did Dr. Scott do the surgery? I would be afraid of him too if I was a nurse, haha. He was the first surgeon we met, very direct and professional..all good things and it helps that he is chief, that would make me feel better. Seems like Luis is making good progress, very good to hear!

Jeff's surgery is on Tuesday. He was getting very anxious about it, but seems to be doing better after we spoke to our surgeon. Our doc is also the chief of thoracic surgery, but at John Hopkins. Whenever Jeff gets a little worried I ask him to remember how blessed he is to be able to have surgery and that we have found the best surgeon for his situation (he had a previous hernia repair surgery).

So I hope that Luis continues to improve, and that you are able to find peace and strength during this time!

    Hi Laura
I am so glad to hear that Louis is doing well. Sounds like a roller coaster ride indeed, but he seems to be on the road to recovery. And as Niki said, you are so very lucky to be able to have the surgery! May he have a speedy recovery!

    Wonderful news!
    Oh Laura,

This is all SO Good! Thank you so much for your update.

Yes, I believe that many of Nick's fears are anestesia related as well. Probably very similar to Luis'.

How wonderful to have him up walking longer and longer. That is very very encouraging!

It sounds as though you have been blessed with a great surgeon and a wonderful care team - for the most part ;) You're right - I'm sure hospitals are just like the office. A few bad in the with the good.

Take care of yourself while you take care of Luis! We are praying for you and all the others traveling the EC journey :)

    Glad to hear...
    Laura,
Great to hear that Luis made it through and is on the road to recovery!
I will be praying and looking for updates.
Thank you for taking time, in the midst of this major life event, to log in here and share it with us all. Very moving.
We are all rooting for him, and for you too.
    He has a great nurse!

I hate to hear about 'regular' hospital staff that don't seem to care. Makes my blood BOIL! It's the same at EVERY facility. Always great staff in ICU or CICU and then, on the other floors, it is hit and miss.
Wish they would make a database where you could rate their work habits and empathy, and they got PAID or fired depending on their performance! That would solve these issues fast!
Nothing beats a worker bringing in a MENU when someone can't have anything by mouth! Gheeze!

I digress.....Great news! Go take care of your hubby and post when you can. An congratulations on being able to watch this miracle surgery unfold and give you the promise of life!!
