Update on Luis - roller coaster ride

Luis is doing well. He has been moved out of the ICU and onto the regular surgical floor where the nurses are less attentive. That means that both he and I have to be more vigilant to make sure that he is getting everything looked after and getting all the meds he is supposed to get.

He had another rough night. He started running a fever in the middle of the night, up to 102.5. They couldn't figure out why. At 5 am he was sent for X-rays. The fellow came in and discovered that his NG tube was not functioning properly because the nurse had not connected it right when they moved him. No one thought to flush it. then around 9 am they took him for a CAT scan and made him drink barium. Thankfully, the surgeon was there watching him and made sure everything was ok. The tests showed that his right lung is still partially collapsed but not leaking in any way. He also still has some blood clots and other mucous that needs to be cleaned out. So, he needs to continue to do his breathing exercises and taking his nebulizer treatments. His temp is back to normal now too.

His pain is still being well managed and the surgeon checks on him frequently. His attitude continues to be good. He is continuing to walk as much as he can. The walks are getting longer and faster but he still won't win any races! So, all in all, pretty good for day 3.

Terry, Luis said he was afraid of waking up during the surgery itself and also of strange dreams. I think he was also a little afraid of not waking up at all. None of those things happened, so he was relieved about that.

Jeff, I would characterize the care at Fox Chase as good. As at any work place, some people are better than others. We had a fabulous nurse in the ICU whose name was Lindsay. She was constantly on top of things and checking everything she was supposed to. She was the one who fought to get the pain meds changed and get his pain controlled. We have also had some who are not so good. One respiratory therapist told Luis he should spit. Also had an aide who brought a menu around LOL! The surgeon has been fabulous and I would recommend him to anyone. He is constantly on top of things and even called the first night at 3 am after a 10 hour surgery! The nursing staff moves when he talks. I think they are all afraid of him!

Luis is still not supposed to take anything by mouth. His barium swallow is supposed to be on day 6 after surgery. That would be Monday. Because of the holiday, I'm guessing it will be Tuesday. The NG tube and the chest tubes should come out after that.

I'm going to bring the kids to see him tomorrow. My mom is staying with them and helping out. They are 8 and 13. Our 18 year old started college last week and seems very self absorbed. Can't wait until he gets over being 18!
