Happy Birthday GaryIrish-Psychic said:Thanks Hopefull...
I read it wrong and I didn't understand...but you are right yes that what he meant I think,
My Dad has had his Prosectomy 10 years ago as I have mentioned in previous posts, he is finished all tests now Bone Scan was clear, MRI Scan Complete, CAT Scan Complete he will start his treatment now the end of this month.
Thanks for keeping me patient though and not over panicking,
Best Wishes,
Gary.
You may think that I am one of those “robots” connected to an electronic notepad to inform “clients” of their special dates, but I am not.
I have sympathy to you and your family because I know how much closed members can surfer when one of us gets cancer. My son went “bananas” when told of my case, he was your age at 29 years old and he may have been the one most affected. That was eleven years ago.
Today is your special day and I believe you got good news from the hospital.
Hopefully your life returns to normalcy the soonest and that your dad gets an excellent treatment for his case.
Enjoy your day.

Also only 4 cups of Tea a day and he looooves his Tea so can he have more but de cafinated Tea or what is the reason behind only 4 cups of Tea? is it for the urine etc and not to have much?
Thank you all so much for my Birthday wishes on the 13th it was a nice night I only had friends and family and it was very small but Dads brothers were all there and his sister so thats the main thing,

Hi Gary
I do not use skype. Tried to reply to your e-mail but your server indicated an "error".
However I wish the best to your dad and send my sympathy to your mother.
We survivors of cancer understand well each other.
It all indicates that your dad is in good hands at the hospital where he will be treated from today.
The daily treatment is short in time and that may imply boredom to your father without much to do. You may visit him from time to time to entertain him.
The water drunk before each section will fill the bladder (become like a balloon) to allow better radiation of the underneath prostate fossa and providing diminished side effects to the organ.
When in radiation treatment, tea and any supplement that acts similarly to an antioxidant is not recommended to take by many doctors because it will give a chance to cancer cells to recuperate from the “RT blow”. They want the cancer down on the canvas forever.
I wish you and your family peace of mind

Thank you so much VGama,
I got your e mail thank you very much,
He should be starting now tomorrow 30th August 2011.
I was wondering why the Tea that only 4 cups was allowed so thank you for explaining that to me, what else will I tell him to bring from the Radiation treatment, obviously they mark you up and that stays on your skin etc but he was told to get non perfumed shower gel we have that got in, will he need anything else do you think,
Thank you so much,
I plan on visiting them every Wednesday so they will get into the routine then on what is happening and throughout the day they will be mixing with other people so I do hope the time flys...
After the 7 weeks of treatment we wont have any news will we in time for Christmas to show the Cancer is gone or will there be any indication that it is going down etc will they do a PSA test straight after it?
Thank you so much,

Apart of the water that I was told to drink 45 minutes before each section, nothing else was recommended. The radiologist will do a CT scan or MRI to plan the radiation field, before starting any treatment. Tattooing (three small spots) is done at the time but that will disappear after the treatment.
You should ask for the complete protocol from his doctor in regards to the volume of radiation (Greys) in total and/or per section. You could also inquire about the MRI results which you were so avid in having two month ago.
At the middle of the treatment your dad may feel difficulty or irritation when urinating but that is normal and it is treated with separate medicines. Closer to the end I experienced mild pain when urinating and stool become must liquefied. I never experienced any burning of the skin or fatigue. Your father should inform the nurses and doctors when he feels something different.
After treatment, some doctors do the first PSA two month past the end of radiation sections, but it is common to have a PSA done every three months until it gets to nadir.
It took me 13 months to reach such low level.
If sections start on the second week of September, your dad should be home by November and he could get a PSA test by Christmas. Surely the level of PSA would be lower than the present level but still high.
The important is that he spends a lovely season with the family and that he is fit to eat all the goodies.
He will do fine.
Take care.

Hey Ya,
Dad has had his first treatment over, and said it was fine he had an ECG at 3Pm followed by treatment at 4Pm, We dropped them up yesterday to the lodge and although Mam was very very nervous we left them and that night I rang to see were they ok and I couldn't hear them but could hear alot of noise and singing I said are you in the pub? No they replied we are all singing away here in the lodge as the "Guests" as I am calling them and not Patients are all singing away, so Thankfully it is a place that they can feel relaxed in and at home, They could not be as nice in Oakland Lodge, you can get what ever food you wish any time you like and make as much tea as you like which I have asked already it did say 4 cups and VGama thank you for answering me, but is de decaffeinate tea as bad or would that be better as there is no caffeine in it? Cause Dad does love his cup of Tea or can he take the normal Tea and just make sure he is drinking plenty of water?
Also the word NADIR I am presuming that means 0 right?
I am very happy today's treatment started and I am very happy to have you all hear for the support that I need also as you would not realize how much seriously you have put my mind at ease in knowing my Dad will be on the mend in no time and will be finished all treatment for Christmas and his Birthday is in November so its something to look forward to,
Thank you so much,

Hope all goes as you been expecting.
You have not described the treatment protocol or the MRI results yet. You could ask your daddy the details as it will help you and I in understanding the progress of the treatment.
Regarding NADIR, after treatment your dad will do several PSA tests each showing a lower result. Nadir PSA is the PSA that shows the “lowest value” among all the tests. This Nadir level together with the time (number of months) it took to reach that point, is an important parameter in the context of the treatment. Doctors can evaluate the success of the treatment from those numbers.
Nadir therefore does not mean zero but the lowest number, which could have been “0”, 1 or 2 or 3……
Mine was a value of 0.05. I believe your dad will get to a similar number.
In regards to tea and other drinks and foods, your dad should follow the recommendations of his doctor. Mine recommended me to drink lots of water during the day and allowed me to have two glasses of red wine at dinner time with the meals, if I was not on medication (used for treating any side effect).
Glad to know your parents are doing well at the lodge.
Good Luck for all of you.

Hey all,
I did reply Vgama to E-Mail not to sure again if it went through, Dad and Mam have just left for the train and up to Dublin for his treatment, he is doing fantastic he has 3 more weeks now, 2 after this week so it really is after flying by. Mam goes up with him each week and took a break last week and stayed at home as it is difficult being up there and different from being at home and she needed to recharge, but they all know her, there is people also up there who dont have cancer so they all bond together and they are all a pact it really is lovely to know that he is comfortable where he is. Hes already starting Fund Raising and they are all doing it because the treatment that they are getting is second to none. The only side effects Dad has had is going to the loo all the time maybe during the night but he doesn't mind and he also was constipated but I think he is taking something for that now.
I remember you wanted me to ask Dad what is he getting and I did ask him and he said something but I forget so if you would like me to ask him for the nurses to just fill out a form with regarding his grays etc please list what you would like me to ask him by using the * followed by the word you want filled in,
I am very much at ease here minding the house and I ring Mam & Dad each evening just to check in and they are fine so that's all the worry's I had out the window,
Thank you all so much for reading these posts and for replying,

I am very glad for the news on the treatment of your father. I hope for his continuous eventless treatment. He can expect for some sort of inflammation on the areas being radiated so that he may get symptoms when urinating or passing stool, but this are symptoms that will stop once the treatment ends. The usual side effects disappear two or three months after.
Regarding the data, I would recommend you to get the radiation total dosage (Greys) and number of sections and other detail (if any) on the protocol. Your dad can inquire about it in his next meeting with the doctor.
I like to know that you have accomplished your dream in your new home.
I got your e-mail. Thanks

Hey VGama & Everyone...
Dad is fully finished his treatment today and is in the best of form and is so delighted. The consultant said he is very happy and will be seeing Dad in 6 weeks time. I have asked Dad VGama for everything so I will be updating it here for exactly what he got in dosage etc,
As a surprise I have painted their bedroom as you should of seen it before hand oh my gawd was it bad lol so it now looks like a hotel room and its always sad leaving friends you made in Dublin etc but he is so delighted to be on the way home for good.
They are all meeting up in November they are all going to a hotel for music and staying 2 nights with the other people they met up their who also had Cancer so to say they have made friends in times like that is just fantastic but Dad is like that he chats to everyone and even the new people coming in for treatment he was over straight away making sure they were ok and showing them around and making sure they were ok.
This website has given me so much support and its Vgama and company I would like to thank sincerely, The next news I am waiting on now is the house that we got it but I am remaining positive like you have to and that means I will be moving out before Christmas so it is all exciting being honest and the fact that his treatment is finished now is amazing.
Its his Birthday now in November so he will be excited he will be 66 .
Since he has had no real major side effects while during treatment he did go asleep in the evening at 8Pm while up in the lodge is their other side effects to be expected now since he is finished or will he be on the mend now?
Should he continue to drink loads of water like during treatment or can he just take it easy?
Thank you all so much with best wishes,

Thanks for sharing the info on your father’s case. 74 Gy in 37 sections makes a lot of sense to me.
The side effects from the treatment may come at a later period. However, the most intense ones are reported to happen during the first two months post RT. It seems that your dad did well with the treatment and now we all should have our fingers crossed hoping for a full success. The PSA test will be the mark to follow. I would recommend your dad to get 3-month periodical tests until that reach the nadir level. It may take more than one year to get the response but just the positive attitude your father is showing, is already indicative of a successful “story”.
I am very glad for you, him and your mother.
Wish him a happy 66 birthday and celebrate the outcome.
I will drink a pint in celebration here down in the ALGARVE.

Hi VGama,
Just wondering what age should I be tested I am now 30 if I got tested now would it be a good idea to see what my PSA Marker would be or would it be 0?
Just wondering or would my PSA be very high and give a false positive?
Thanks so much,

Hi Gary
Prostate cancer running in the members of the same family is “real” but not all males have encounters with the “bandit”. Your brother and you, and your uncles all run the same risk but at different levels. I am glad for seeing you discussing the matter now at your young age and being so interested in the test. You can do it now but I doubt you find a “false positive”.
The Cancer Research UK quotes the following:
“……If you have a relative diagnosed with prostate cancer you are at higher risk compared to the general population. If your father had prostate cancer your risk is 1.5 times higher. If you have a brother with prostate cancer, your risk is higher, at just under 3 times the average risk.
The age your relative is diagnosed with prostate cancer is also a factor. If they were diagnosed before the age of 60, this increases your risk by about 4 times the average. And if you have more than one first degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer (at any age) your risk is also about 4 times the average. A first degree relative means father, brother or son….”
Recommendations at European urological associations are for PCa screening at the age of 50 in the general populace and 45 when a family member had been diagnosed with cancer. Nevertheless not all doctors follow this principle and not many are screened at their annual health checkups. It is our responsibility of being cautious and demand for the tests timely.
I was diagnosed with PC when I become 50 with a PSA at 22.4. With some simple calculations I got to the conclusion that the cancer has probably developed before my 44 and shown its “face” when I was 45/46, but with no symptoms and uneducated on the matter I did nothing until I was caught with the bandit at 50.
Many guys are now diagnosed with the cancer in their 40th. My son did his first PSA at 40 years old and fortunately it was negative (<0.01). He will check again in two years time.
Hopefully you and my son will never experience such disease; nevertheless you should be attentive to prevent any advance the earliest.
The best to you,
VGama0
