Mutated Gene

Last week I had a blood test completed to see if I had one of two genes that if they mutated my chances for a reacurrance would go through the roof. Also if they were mutated I also would have a much hight chance to get other types of cancer. One was going from a 8% chance of getting breast cancer to an 64% chance of getting it. Just got the call both genes are fine NO MUTATION. It is nice to get good news when your world right now looks sooooo dark.

That's great news Anne. Do you know what genetic mutations you were being tested for?

    Thanks Anne,
I've had a lot of genetic testing done. I'd be really interested to find out what gene(s) were being tested.

Dreamer - I think it is a good idea to have the testing at some point. In the event (hoping it doesn't happen) that you have a recurrance, there are treatments that are more effective for BRCA positive women.

Anne - congratulations on being BRCA negative.

    BRCA1 & BRCA2 genes
I also had the test. I go back next week to find out the results. To me it was important because I have a daughter who I hope NEVER has to go through what we are going through. She's almost 12 and the genetic counselor said she didn't recommend testing girls that young but that if I'm positive we can share that information with her doctors and they can begin screening her at an earlier age and keep a close eye on her. I also have a son and men can develop breast cancer. Also if he is positive and has daughters there is a 50% chance of him passing it to a daughter and of course I wouldn't want a granddaughter to face this. Plus I have 8 female cousins on my mom's side and 1 on my dad's side. It would be important information for them if I'm positive and we determine which side of the family it came from.

If I'm not positive for those mutations, she suggested screening for Lynch syndrome which runs in families and includes uterine, colorectal, ovarian and a few other cancers. She recommened this test if the BRCA was negative because I had 2 grandparents on the same side of the family (mom's side) with colon cancer. And when my mother had her hysterectomy at age 38 she had pre-cancerous cells in her uterus.
