Bragging - Ignore If You're Feeling Sorry for Yourself at All

OK - just finished a whine, so time to focus on what's good.

Couple weeks ago, I was bummed because I ordered country fried steak at a restaurant, and couldn't eat it. No shinola, Sherlock - been a long time since I could. But I had a wild hare, so I went for it - you all know how it is. I didn't even think about it before ordering.

Saturday, had the same wild hare (or one very closely related to it). Was (over)eating at Golden Corral with cousins, and got myself some steak. Not chopped steak. Not country fried steak. It was steak - the kind of steak I've been daydreaming about eating with horseradish. Golden Corral had no horseradish, so I got some cocktail sauce (yes, I know that's nasty - admit it, you guys have eaten some pretty nasty stuff lately, too, I know you have). AND I ATE THE STEAK. AND I swallowed the steak. I celebrated by having some melon, peaches and steak for dessert. It overrode my neck lump in the "what's new?" department.

So - what have you all celebrated lately? It may not be steak, but doesn't mean it's not worth celebrating. I remember one day during treatment celebrating a bowel movement.

    The good!
    I had a nice slab of medium prime rib over the weekend! With Au Jus of course! I think that is how you spell it. Also half a stuffed cornish game hen, with hunter sauce & it was so freaking good I almost licked the plate. I been trying everything lately & with success i must add. Coconut cream pie for dessert. Yes I have been a Piggy! Sorry for the above post. I tried to correct it but would not allow me to!

    My Grill
    I reacquainted myself with my gas grill yesterday. For the first time in about a year, as outdoor cookery was about the last thing on my mind last year - due to surgery, then chemo and rads(great way to spend the summer). Smoked brats, nicely caramelized onions, spicy mustard, lovingly nestled on a slice of rye bread.

    It was a good day.

    Consecutive swallows.
    Mark was thrilled the other day when he was drinking a bottle of water and he could "gulp, gulp, gulp" instead of "gulp" pause, "gulp" pause, "gulp" pause. He is almost one year post diagnosis and this was a big deal for him. "Thrilled" is my word...not his. He also was eager to get this new picture up.

    Congratulations
    Dear Pam, Connie finished her radiation treatments Mar.17th, 2011 and I can't wait til she can eat solid food again. Right now she is still on the peg tube and is far from being over all the treatments. I can't wait til we can walk into a restaurant again, I haven't and won't eat out til she can but I miss it. I really got a good laugh when you mentioned the last celebration you had was when you had a bowel movement, "so true". That is something only a cancer patient or caregiver could understand. Someday, I wish everyone on this site could all get together and go out to a restaurant. I'm sure that their would be no rush to eat and peg tubes would be allowed. I love all the people I have met on this site and someday Connie and I are going to get out John's map "where in the world are you" and just go visit all our friends that we have never met. Until then everyone should just "Eat, Drink and be Merry" and of course thank God for the blessing of Life. Love Ya, Connie & Homer P.S. Hoping the lump on your neck is nothing!!!

    Steak? Now that is a milestone! Buzz is about 2 1/2 months post treatment and is finally eating some normal things: soups, fruit in cool whip, cereal, pasta, and meatballs in liquid. He has made tentative steps toward restaurant eating. We recently had lunch with a friend in Santa Fe and even the dressing for the salad burned his tongue. Nothing else on the menu was not spicy in some way (that is Santa Fe for you). He ended up with a glass of milk with Scandishake in it. Those of you ending treatment or in the midst of it: take heart. Time heals. Karen

    Very happy that Buzz is able to eat more. That is great progress.

    I keep trying bites of other peoples steak and I still cannot swallow it. I can manage steak'ums, with I suppose is better than nothing. :)

    I was able to eat some at the spaghetti super at church the other night. That was nice.

    steak-ums? sounds like a pet treat..or a cute nickname for a macho carnivore with a soft side.
    I am looking forward to steak!! Have not been successful yet.
    Today I had some clams, which slid down ever so nicely..
    SO absolutely great to rejoice as others begin to re-enter the world of eating!!

    Yeah, it's frozen chip steak that you make cheese steaks out of. Yummy with fried mushrooms, onions and cheese. Or made with eggs. In a steak eggs and cheese sandwich. Listen... Do you hear that? Sounds like my arteries hardening.

    Ooh! Clams. I think I miss them even more that steak. I really miss my dads linguine and clam sauce. I just cannot chew up or chop up the clams small enough to get them past my stricture. I've tried to make a linguine and scallop version. It's ok, but not even close to being as good as clams.

    I still see the old one. Well, if you see a beach picture, it was taken on Miami Beach last weekend. Fabulous, and Mark felt great in the warm sun and swimming in the turquoise water.

    Not surprised Mark wanted the new pic up - you look mahvelous! It was good for me, too, being able to drink in slurps instead of sips.

    Would be Cool
    Imagine all of us sitting down for a meal - no one would get a second glance pulling out their feeding tube and syringe - and everyone would have enough time to eat whatever they could manage without the others constantly checking their watches. Course, it'd have to be an all you can eat buffet - with vats of gravy. Hope you two are eating out soon.

    Salad Dressing
    Karen,

    I used to get bitter when a couple folks here talked about living on salads when I couldn't get the greens down, and the dressing burned too much to eat for a long time. USED TO. Dressing still has a bite to it, but I can eat it again now (I can even eat mild salsa). Hope Buzz gets there quickly.
