Low Iodine Diet
I am starting this diet this coming Monday.
I know a lot of you guys have done this or are doing it.
I would love to have actual suggestions for breakfast, lunch and dinner because this seems the hardest for me to figure out ...

I am approaching my 1 year out from my RAI and getting ready for a WBS in may so i am again looking up and pulling up all my LID stuff cause i will have to go back on it for another 10 or so days.0 -

My biggest problem is that I LOVE milk and products that contain milk/dairy .... 3 weeks without it, I think I'm going to have withdrawls!

I am going to have to do it too mid April for the first time so if you find anything that is really a good "staple" let me know. I downloaded the cookbook and it does have some great recipes in there. Just have to remember to prepare things early because when you go hypo you won't feel like fixing anything. Good luck! Keep us posted on how things turn out!

I found substitutes that were life saving for me was the Fleischmanns unsalted margarine and then added the non iodized salt to it and whipped it for fake butter and also tried the hemp milk at trader joes...not bad on cereal. Only milk I could find without salt added commercially.0 -

I'm the same why with milk. I love milk and almost everything dairy!!!
I'm on my first week of the diet and have found this time a little easier than the first time last summer.
The thyca cookbook has a recipe for nutty milk and I tried it. The taste is ok but it very lumpy with bits of the nut. I googled and found another more detailed way and plan on trying it this weekend.

What works for me for breakfast is steel cut oats with honey and fresh strawberries, counts as one of my 4 servings of grain. I'll cook 3-4 days worth at a time (takes about 40 min to cook on the stove) and heat it up in the microwave in the morning.
Another thing I eat almost every day is baked sweet potatoes. I peel then, place them in a zip-lock back with olive oil and Italian seasoning, shake, and then spread on a cook sheet and bake until slightly soft, stirring once or twice during baking. I normally bake 3 at a time which last me three days. Just remember, no potato skin.
And I've also found honey makes everything better0 -

I heard that Strawberries have Iodine. Looked on line one day while I was enjoying an all natural Strawberry juice pop and there it was. I had to stop eating it and let my daughter have the rest of them. I could be wrong or the web site was wrong but I would research it before buying them. Here is the link:

Agreed, but everything has iodine in it. It is simply just a low iodine diet, not a iodine free diet. I have read in the thyca low iodine cookbook that strawberries are fine. I'm a crazy researcher and read everything under the sun, every restriction, everything allowed. I drive my family crazy with all my rules and research, lol.
And today I made an almond butter smoothie that was mighty tasty. All the recipes online for peanut butter smoothies called for milk or something similar so I had to find something else.
I used fresh unsalted almond butter, handful of blackberries (think blueberries might be more tasty but ran out over the weekend), apple juice, and a banana. A very nice filling smooth dink.
I also had my second attempt at making the fresh almond milk. Much better Straining the almonds makes a world of difference.0 -

The almond butter smoothie is actually very filling for breakfast and good for on the go. Blend it and pour it a bottle with a lid and go. I had the almond smoothie with blueberries yesterday and 3 egg whites and was good good until lunch. And you could use peanut butter too.
But on my way home last night all I could think of was pizza. Pizza is my biggest weakness, I would eat it everyday if I could. But not until the end of next week, maybe as my reward to myself for making it through the 3 weeks on this crazy diet.
And don't forget about melons, like cantaloupe and honeydew. Cut them up and throw in a zip-lock bag and take on the go with you as a snack.0 -

I loved eating frozen grapes. I bought the seedless variety and froze them. Taste like little grape popsicles. I also enjoyed frozen sliced bananas smothered in the no salt peanut butter for a snack. Soooooo yummy!

@ Diane2h81, I'm trying to find out how high the iodine content is in coconut.
I LOVE my coconut water, and I cook with coconut oil, and eat coconut chips as a snack on a regular basis. These are my favorite guilt-free snacks, but I can NOT find any information on the internet about the iodine content.
I am going to steal your smoothie recipes--thanks for sharing! I start my diet tomorrow, and am so unprepared0 -

I'm not sure on the exact amount of iodine in coconut but I do know that it is very HIGH in iodine. Everything I read says no coconut. So... I would say you would need to cut out your quilt-free snack. It is a sacrifice but only for a short time.
My sacrifice is dairy. I love dairy but it is not as quilt-free as coconut.

Sorry to say every time i try to do a serch for coconut and iodine the first 4 pages in google serch related to coconut being the best source for organic iodine...
so um.. i would say its high in iodine. I havent been able to find a nutrition lable with iodine since its not something that is required to be put on lables so no one shows it.
if it is a manufactured product you could call the company and ask specificaly about the amount of iodine in the product but i dont think nature is answering the phone right now.
LID means sacrifices for all and its only for a few weeks.

Almond milk was on the approved list from my NucMed group. I was skeptical since I'm not really a fan of milk substitutes, but this is good. I just started my 2 week diet today, and I used the almond milk to make a smoothie for breakfast. It was delicious, and stuck with me for quite some time.
Other than that, I don't really have any ideas for replacing other dairy items since most of the substitutes contain soy.0 -

If you are buying almond milk read everything in the ingredients. All the ones I've seen in the store have salt or even sea salt. Sea salt is not on the approved list and we also have no idea if the salt used by the manufacture is iodized or not.
Now if you are making your own then you should be fine.0 -

I think you are right Diane. All of the milk substitutes I found on the market had either salt or soy. I was under the assumption that Sea salt, because it came from the sea, was more iodized than regular table salt. I can't remember why I thought that but I think it was something I read on the thyca site.

I remember seeing that as well Julie....it does say Sea Salt is worse than regular. I am not looking forward to this, but I will try to plan everything before hand. I need to find some smoothie recipes and learn how to make them...lol0 -

Sea Salt and everything from the sea is high iodine. 8-/
And I posted a few smoothie recipes above if you want to check them out. And try out your recipes before you start the diet. That way if it is nasty you’re not left starving with nothing to eat.
