My friend who had the bilateral masectomy 2 weeks ago asked me about taking her BP. She only had nodes rempved on the side with the tumor. Is it ok for her to take her blood pressure on the other arm or not? I know I was told not to use my left arm for BP which was the side I had lumpectomy I was unsure so I came to the experts! God Bless

Please have her check with her doctor .. I have been
told in no uncertain terms ... blood pressure to be taken on my ankles - only. This is my case only.. bi lateral 1/12/10. .. Please please have her check.

    Checking BP
I had a bilateral mastectomy on 12/23/10 and they took 16 lymph nodes from one side and 18 from the other. When I have my blood pressure taken now, I bring a wrist blood pressure cuff with me which I bought at Walmart and the nurses let me use it-no problem!!

    I've had a bilateral
I've had a bilateral mastectomy with nodes taken on the left side. I've been told not to have my blood pressure taken on that side. Also no labs. But it is OK to have labs and blood pressure taken on my right arm because no lymph nodes were taken from that side. Of course, it's always best to check with your caregiver. xoxoxoxo Lynn

Have her ask her doctor. I
Have her ask her doctor. I don't know if she should have BP taken in either arm.

    Thank you
Thank you all for the help. She ask me and I guess I had not thought of it with a bilateral. I knew I could not check BP or do labs on the side they removed nodes on. She had someone check it on her ankle area and is going to ask Dr. about it tomorrow when she sees him. Thanks again. God Bless

    I am a maverick. I have both
I am a maverick. I have both done on both arms. I ask them to pump the arm up manually and not go too high. (my blood pressure is low) no choice for blood draws although they try to use the oldest arm. having said this, it is not a good arm for drawing because the veins on worse on that side. so whatever works. BP in the leg can run higher, so be aware of that. I treat any cuts I receive right away, I also wear gloves doing any yard work, and am careful of lifting. I do not carry packages or pocketbooks with my arm hanging down. and wear sleeves on airplanes to prevent lymphedema.

    is it the mastectomy that
is it the mastectomy that causese this or the removal of the lymph nodes?i think it is from the lymph node removal, not the acutally mastectomy itself.
