Sorry you are having to go through this. When I first got my port I felt it every minute, but after just a couple of days, I got used to it. I will admit, I wanted it out as soon as I could after chemo, but lots of people leave theirs in. It makes receiving chemo so much easier than getting poked and prodded that, for many of us, it becomes our little buddy. Anyway, I hope that you too will find that it makes everything easier and that you get used to it too.

Yes, it does feel weird for
Yes, it does feel weird for a while. How are you feeling? I have never been shot but that is how I felt during recovery. I was really, really scared to sleep/roll over and such. Eventually, after it got "settled in" I would show people and it freaked them out, especially the tube that goes up to the clavical.

For me, knowing how everything works really helps me. I was always in awe of it. My husband are on dialysis so he is used to fistulas and such. He kept assuring me that it would not come out and that I would be fine. I think it only got hit once by my son's head when I was tickling him. I don't think anyone here has had a problem with a port from what I have read so far. For most we loved having it, but of course were thrilled to have it be gone. If you have seen my earlier post, I made mine into a keychain! I think the only bummer for me was that I bought a really sexy dress prior to my diagnosis to wear for our 21st anniversary 3/18 but never got to go out let alone wear it. I wanted one last anniversary before the scars. Oh well, maybe I will wear it this year, it will be the first of the rest of our anniversaries together.

I had my port implanted 1 week before chemo started. While it did not hurt it certainly felt strange. I felt like there was a string attached from my neck to my chest and couldn't move properly without a taut/stretching sensation. That lasted only a couple of days. I was mentally unable to feel the port and cringed every time I did accidentally touch it. The thing basically just creeped me out. Don't get me wrong - I was very grateful to have that port during chemo. With 16 rounds of chemo, blood draws and a few sessions of IV fluids I don't know what I would have done without it. After chemo was done (this past August)I went to my surgeon's office and had it removed. All I have left of it is a small healing scar.

Im getting my port next week and the surgeon said it would take about a week to feel "normal", but in talking to people who have already been on this journey - a port is a silver lining in the dark cloud!!

Hi Diane,
I have had my port in since December 10th. What an annoying feeling it can be. You know it is always there. Should feel better when the swelling goes down, then you will hardly know it is there. When I reach across mt chest to the left side it bugs me aliitle but it just a little reminder that it is still there. Hope this helps. good luck
