One tree took out electricity, cable and gas for the neighborhood. How did it take out gas? The high-tension electricity found a ground wire to the gas pipe and punched a hole through it. They turned off the gas for a few days while doing the repair.
Not until elec and gas companies were through could the cable company move in, so we were without cable for four days.
As a sign of the times, the neighbors all agreed that of the lost utilities, the one we missed the most was cable. Not only was the TV not working but we couldn't even get news from the internet. All we heard about what was going on in NYC was by word of mouth!
Radio news isn't satisfactory because they assume you are getting news from cable!
It sounds like you were lucky not to have a gas explosion. So glad you're safe; I had missed you on the Board.0 -

Where are you located? Do you have power?
Been watching the news and heart goes out to our New York and New Jersey neighbors. Looks like you're on stage once again to show the world that New York grit. Know we have your back. Have a sudden yearning to hear Alicia Keyes sing New York!
I'm located in midtown Manhattan, above 42nd Street. Everyone below 40th Street lost power - the rest of us got lucky. Two hospitals had to be evacuated because their backup generators failed. They are hoping to have the power restored to lower Manhattan by tomorrow. Most of my family and friends in the suburbs are still without power. Didn't get much rain in the suburbs, but those huge old trees come down like dominoes in the wind and they knock out the power lines and transformers. Those on the coast (Long Island, Staten Island, Jersey Shore, edges of lower Manhattan) got the worst of the damage from the incredible tidal surge. Thank you for thinking of us and for your encouraging words. Where are you located? Were you affected by the storm?0 -

We live a block off Baltimore's Inner Harbor and Baltimore was pretty much spared the devastating damage you guys are dealing with. Personally, we did not endure any direct damage. Very lucky. We have three huge skylights through the middle of our townhouse and there were times during the storm we thought the wind would pull them out or the rain would break through. But again we were blessed. Time for the rest of us to rally round our less fortunate neighbors. I'm glad you and yours are safe.0 -

I live in Port Jefferson on LONG ISLAND....it is mass devistation. I was in the hospital during the storm until wed.(pneumonia, pleural effusions) OUR house lost electricity for only 2 days and one of our cars was totaled by a tree....UGHHHhh....but we have housed many family and friends providing food and shelter and warm showers. I am glad we can help. It is crazy here but we are all pulling together helping doing food drives and clothing drives. I am about 8 miles to the south and 2 miles from the north of all devistated areas. Its sad a lot of my friends lost everything. I feel grateful to have my home and family !!! This kind of stuff puts life into perspective...I have been struggling with all this cancer **** as i am only 10 weeks post op/diagnosis this storm was a major distraction and i will continue to help as much as I can. !!!0 -

Thank goodness you got through Sandy relatively unscathed, though having a car totaled is no joke. And being in the hospital during a "storm of the century" is stressful when you're separated from family and you don't know how they are faring. The devastation on Long Island looks mind-numbing, but familiar. I lived through Hurricane Andrew, a category 5 storm that flattened South Forida in 1992. Dozens and dozens of co-workers and friends lost their homes and everything they owned. Mother Nature's good at giving the unexpected kick in the ****, isn't she? Glad to hear your family is well and you're home is intact.0
