John and I usually are the first to discount big news stories of weather predictions, but this one hosts lots of frightening elements. Take the recommended precautions and stay safe.

Take care of yourself and all your loved ones, including the four-legged variety! Prayers are with you all.

    Amen Alice! We've spent two days batting down the hatches - removing lawn furniture, flower pots, hoses & presidential election signs from outside the house so they won't become missles in the expected high winds. Bought non-perishable food and water for the very real possibility of being without electricity for several days (hope it's not longer), propane for the grill so we'll be able to cook, batteries for the flashlights and lanterns. Been doing all laundry so that will have been taken care of, cooking a few day's worth of meals that won't need to be refrigerated if the power goes. All done with the full knowledge that the hysterical weather reporters could be wrong in their predictions. So glad not to be thinking about cancer!

    Where are you located? Is it New York? I heard they've already closed the transportation system in New York. Are you on the water?

    I was just at Petsmart stocking up for my pets, and John and I went grocery shopping yesterday, though we needed little. Since the shelves were mostly bare, good thing. Schools have already been closed for tomorrow. I don't usually worry much about forecasts, but there seem to be a lot of negative forces coming together on this one. Really hope it's just hype.

    I'm in Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia. Latest news has Sandy making landfall just north of Atlantic City, about an hour and a half from here. Just starting to drizzle now! Thank God I'm not near water. Those folks are going to have a hard time. But I do have 15 towering trees that are upwards of 100 years old that I would hate to lose (not to mention the damage they could do if felled). Their age makes them vulnerable I fear. Fingers crossed. Hype would be a good thing. Here's hoping for hype!

    My daughter and 3 granddaughters are in Owings Mills, NW of Baltimore. They are on high groung so the big worry is if power goes out. At one time they were thinking of driving to Michigan which is out of Sandys range.

    Sandy definitely has our attention
    Keep hoping it sounds worse than it is going to be. I live a block off Baltimore's Inner Harbor so we'll be watching the flooding reports closely. Stay safe everyone!

    They are expecting mostly high winds in Ct. I guess we are prepared. Those of you getting rain, be careful too. Kids here may be missing Holloween for 2 years in a row. How strange is that?

    Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you further up the coast. We (Wilmington, NC) were spared this go around but I mailed my flood insurance premium today anyway. Ouch.

    Right now in the Northern suburbs of Detroit the winds are 36 MPH with gusts ro 60 MPH on the West side of Sandy . In Owings Mills 15 miles from the Baltimore nner Harbor the winds are 28 mph gusting to 40 mph. Our basketball pole from the 80's came down and took a slice off the side of our car.So far no storm surge in Michigan, but we are going to lose a lot of power with these winds and leaves on most of the trees..

    Power out
    We lost our power at 5:15pm. Now running on generator. I reside in Rockville, MD - two miles from the Human Genome Project and the heart of NIH...

    Not sure how much longer our Internet access will stay up. The storm has still not reached its peak here.

    Wow - Sandy is one angry woman
    Wow-she's got even longer arms than I realized. I just heard part of the Atlantic City boardwalk had disappeared as had the fishing pier in Ocean City, MD. We are in official "stay in place" status with only emergency vehicles allowed on Baltimore streets. I'm amazed I can still post here and hope we continue to keep our power; know how fortunate we are.

    Stormy weather
    Have been watching reports on and off all night and still worried for you folks. I worry about power outages, dislocation of hospital schedules and infection risks during the clean-ups, in addition to the more obvious hazards.

    It will be cheering for everyone here(CSN) if those in the hurricane's path can post to assure us you're OK.

    Well, we made it through the storm without damage. No property destruction or loss of power. Very fortunate. If anyone needs leaves, I seem to have collected a few. I have the equivalent of "Snow drifts" of leaves that collect where a vortex of wind circles and dumps them. I hope y'all are OK. Just another test.

    Well, the worst of Sandy is behind us and I'm still able to post -- don't need to pull out the wet vac -- and John and I are safe and dry. John is supposed to receive Votrient today and SANDY may delay delivery but we can deal with that. Overall, it could have been so much worse and we're both thankful it wasn't. Just hope everyone else has persevered as well. We're still restricted on going out (driving) but hopefully tonight that will change.

    Still without power here but no other real damage. Just a lot of yard work ahead of me. The power issue is frustrating - it is only out along my street (effecting about 50 homes). My neighbor across the street (on a different feeder) got his power restored within a few hours. My neighbors behind me (also on a different feeder) never lost power at all.

    Well, at least our generator and Internet access still works. Now we get to see how long it will take PEPCO (our much reviled local power company) to deal with our little problem...

    Thanks for wondering where the heck I was. All is well outside Philly with the one exception of having no power. Trees are still upright (I love my trees). No house damage. No flooded basement. Steve & I are sitting in a Starbucks busily communicating with family & friends 'cause our cell phones don't work - a tower must be out, or maybe gazillions of folks are all trying to call out & text at the same time, overwhelming the system. Feeling fortunate though. Our doggie child was a nervousness wreck last night and the drenched mess in the yard still kind of freaks him. Cardinals and bluejays were busy rebuilding their nests all morning,which was fascinating to watch. Yes, Sandy is officially old news.

    One tree took out electricity, cable and gas for the neighborhood. How did it take out gas? The high-tension electricity found a ground wire to the gas pipe and punched a hole through it. They turned off the gas for a few days while doing the repair.

    Not until elec and gas companies were through could the cable company move in, so we were without cable for four days.

    As a sign of the times, the neighbors all agreed that of the lost utilities, the one we missed the most was cable. Not only was the TV not working but we couldn't even get news from the internet. All we heard about what was going on in NYC was by word of mouth!
    Radio news isn't satisfactory because they assume you are getting news from cable!
