My 75-year-old Mom is now one of us... :-(
Some time during the 2nd week of December - learned my 75-year-old Mom had been DXed with breast cancer. Surgery followed about a week later. Final post-op pathology results were delivered the Friday before Christmas Day. We all got through the holidays, made the best of them - though they were very simplified, scaled back, and a bit somber.
We were - of course! - hoping she'd escape chemo, and (maybe) need only rads. Unfortunately for her, not to be. She's scheduled for her first treatment February 3rd. And, my 80-year-old Dad is not coping very well with any of this. They are both devastated.
Please - powerful pink sisters, friends, Kindred Spirits - am asking for hopes, good thoughts, positive vibes, magic wishes - I'm frantically waving my wand, prayers (whatever it is you do, doesn't matter - any and all will be greatly appreciated!) on behalf of my elderly Mom, primarily. Secondarily, on behalf of my elderly Dad.
Thank you. XO
Kind regards, Susan

Breast Cancer has no Age Limit!
Dear Susan,
It is always difficult to go through bc ourself and you are on the 2nd time around. Having one's dear mother go through the same can be very dispiriting.
I had a neighbor who was 92 when she was diagnose. At that age, they just removed the tumor (good size too) and she lived another 3 years, dying of old age.
I did have an aunt who was 82 years old at her diagnose and did radiation. She is 94 and still alive, never having a recurrence. They wanted her to have a mastectomy and I told her that one wasn't needed. She did Tamoxifen for 5 years.
It's not easy at that age. Is she hormonal positive?
Best wishes to you and your mother,
Doris0 -

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. My mom is 83 and just had her first colonoscopy. Dr couldn't get very far because of a blockage so I have to take her for a 2nd one. I'm the oldest of her 4 daughters and only my mom and youngest sister have escaped bc. My grandmother had it and one aunt too. I feel bad for your dad too. Please know that you are all in my prayers as she goes through treatment.

Your Mom
Susan:
I was 5 months past my 76th birthday when I got the diagnosis - Stage IIB, HER Pos. Husband was 83. I had 6 months chemo, lumpectomy, 18 lymph nodes removed, radiation, 1 year Herceptin. Last Herceptin was Nov. 2010. The Beast attacks at any age. I don't know what is harder, to face this when one is young, has one's whole life ahead, children to consider, or when one is older and would like nothing more than to have a quiet existence after a life of work. I am up and about, taking care of the household, doing exercise, having a social life, albeit a little slower than before, but what the heck, I am almost 79 now.
Lots of hugs to you and your Mother.

Oh dear Susan - I am so sorry about your mama. We never want anyone to go through this experience we go through, but especially, we don't want our love ones to go through it. I'm sorry she needs the chemo. We know it's very hard, but we will keep her (and your dad) in our prayers. I pray her body stays strong to fight this, and she comes out at the other end recovered.
Big hugs to you.0 -

Susan,
Sending positive thoughts and prayers to your Mom and Dad, hoping for the best outcome possible. Please know that we are here by your side. Maybe she can do weekly Chemo with lower dose instead of once every 3 weeks. Please ask your doctor to make it easy for her.

You,your mom and dad are in my thoughts and prayers. It will be hard on your dad at his age. There will be times that he might not be able to go to the hospital. It is draining on anyone let alone someone your dad's age.I know that when my husband had his hospital stays.Exhausting and trying and I'm in my mid 60's.
As you see from others posts they know of people dx in their late 70's and 80's.You would think you got past a cancer dx at that age. But as we see all the time there is no age barrier. I had benign tumors/cysts since 20. Always worrying about getting cancer. Then I had a hysterectomy. No hormones. Was told not to take hormones either because of family history of BC.As the years went by I became more comfortable.Mammos were good. Then bc hit me at 62 in 2009.
I hope your mom lives to be in her 90's. That is the goal I have for myself.
Best wishes to your family during this trying time.

As if you're not dealing with enough, now your poor mom. I'm hoping her treatment is easy for her and she gets through it very well. Also, hearing about your dad breaks my heart as well. It's so hard to sit and watch a loved one go through this.
My prayers and positive energy go out to you, your mom and dad. Please keep us posted.

So sorry to hear about your mom. I imagine it will be difficult for all of you. I guess the positive part is that her overall health is good enough to endure chemo if she needs it.
Sending my prayers for all of you.
