I am big diet coke drinker...even one in the am on the way to work...drink water most of the day..night instant breakfast...my college daughter texted me about what she learned in class...how many chemicals..etc..cancer causing and all ...to past 2 days OJ it was...so I"ll switch over to sprite/7up! I can't handle real coke/ pepsi after over 35 yr of diet-

anyone else cut it out...due to risks?

No "diet" beverages of any kind for me
I learned real early on how nasty almost all (if not all) the artificial 'sweeteners' are. The chemical sweeteners give me MASSIVE headaches (guess they could be called migraines) while I nedver have headahes normally. I either drink non sweedtend drinks or ones sweetened with cane sugar or honey. I do have to admit that I will occcasionally have a bourbon and coke if we go out to dinner or to Deadwood for the "One Armed Bandits" (slots).

If you 'cold turkey' all the caffine be prepared for caffine withdrawl.

    Moderation
I believe in moderation in all things. I won't give up anything and with stage IV mets to the lungs and pleura, I don't think it makes much difference.

I was a huge diet coke drinker before my diagnosis.
Now I drink seltzer with a splash of cranberry. I read the same info as year daughter so that was an obvious change.

    Never..
Been a diet anything! Artificial sweetness, especially....but I did chew sugarless gum all the time until 14 months ago...come to find out this gum has an ingredient, ie artificial sweetener that was a BIG contributing factor to bad allergy attacks I would have...it was Orbit, sweet mint gum...I loved it...stopped chewing any kind of sugarless gum and haven't had an allergy attack since! Coincidence? I think not....

It has always been my beverage of choice
but since this cancer thing, I now have one maybe twice a week at most. There are no nutritious ingredients in any soda, diet or not, let alone all the bad stuff.

I don't deprive myself of anything, but I do now avoid a lot of things and try to put in my body primarily things that are good for it.

    I avoid canned anything
I avoid canned anything because I am leery of the high amounts of BPA, a chemical that acts like "bad" estrogen in the body. Canned foods have the highest levels of BPA because they have a thin plastic lining (not your grandparents cans) that leaches BPA into the liquid. Consistently all canned soups (and green beans) have very high BPA amounts.

I don't drink a lot of soda anymore, because, as others have said, I am trying to help my body out in this fight by making better choices. And it may not make a difference, but I sure feel better eating better.

    Although I have had the
Although I have had the occasional diet soda, I have never made it a habit to ingest aspartame. It has too many chemicals. I have used stevia lately. Also avoid tomatoes in cans for the same BPA reasons.

    The only canned food I've
The only canned food I've ever used or was raised on other than home canned is tomato sauce/paste when we ran out. Tinned tastes so nasty.

    I don't do soft drinks. I
I don't do soft drinks. I drink water throughout the day and coffee or tea in the mornings with breakfast. I also pack a water bottle for my 11 year old to have at school with lunch. What her to get used to drinking water. Too many sugared flavored drinks out there. That's just my take on it.

I am not a soda drinker...I love water, thankfully! When we go out I drink club soda with lime..but I think I will ask for a splash of cranberry~YUM! I also love wine, and I live in the wine region of California~ seems most everyone I know owns a winery or is a vintner~ including Reggie who makes some wonderful Pinots, Zins and Cabernets. When I met the So Cal sisters, I gave eeach of them 2 bottles of Pinot Grigio a good friend of mine made, with a ChenHeart label.
As Doris said, everything in moderation~ it isn't my liver mets that has made me give up alcohol ( I now can't remember the last time I had any) but the fact that I wear a fentanyl patch...I am being weaned off if it and soon will be patch free~ but I am one of those uber-cautious people who never, ever, mixes drugs, especialy narcotics, and alcohol. I do not need to be fighitng for my life and in the middle of chemo , not to mention bald (LOL) and succumb to some stupid drug/alcohol combo! Ohhhh I would be sooo mad!
As soon as I am weaned from the patch, chemo be damned, I am toasting my sweet Reggie with a nice glass of vino!! So there! hahahahaha!

I grew up drinking Diet Coke and Tab. Never gave it another thought at the time. I don't drink soda at all any more, ever, but do drink tons of iced tea. I have always used artificial sweeteners in it, as well as on cereal. I have used LOTS of artificial sweeteners in my lifetime and addressed this with my breast surgeon. She strongly suggested that I switch to agave, which is a natural product from a cactus. So I have cut back considerably on the artificial sweeteners, but have often wondered what part those may have played in my cancer.

    Well Linda I never drank
Well Linda I never drank much or used artificial sweetners much and I have had cancer 3 times. Who knows.
My aunt always drank a lot of Tab and she got kidney cancer, She thought it could have been from that. I might buy that explanation more since it goes directly through that area. I use stevia, and have been adding crystal light PURE to my water once a day, it has some sugar and stevia in it.
I think the water idea is great Bella Luna especially for your daughter. do you put it in a special container?

    Before my diagnosis in 2005,
Before my diagnosis in 2005, I was a big fan of diet coke. You know, when I was told that I had a malignant tumor...that was the 1st thing that came to mind...did I drink too much diet coke? Needless to say, whether it's proven or not to be one of the culprits, I gave them up along with any other diet cola.

I sweeten my coffee or tea with agave nectar.

I switched from Diet Coke to
I switched from Diet Coke to flavored seltzer. They have lemon, lime, orange ... It takes about a week to get used to it. And when you are at a restaurant, you just ask for selter with lemon. And another benefit is that it looks like a drink, so if you don't want a drink at a party or at a bar, people won't bother you to drink. I also switched from equal to stevia in my coffee. This also takes a little while to get used to, but it can be done.

I have pretty much cut out all carbonated beverages--even before dx. Weight is such
a struggle for me, so I don't need anything bubbly or fizzy to add to the problem.
