Nasty drug reaction

Guys I was having some nerve problems a while back and was taking surplus percocet that was about to expire to cool me down. Believe it or not my nerve problem is over this property line problem we have been fighting for 2 damn months, not over the cancer recurrence. The cancer I can handle.

Well I did not like that idea of tripping out on percocet, so I called my primary doc and asked for something else.

The doc put me on Ativan. 1 mg tab every 8 hours. That put me on my butt, so I cut them in half and only took 1/2 only when needed. For a total of 1mg a day. Hell it worked well. I was sleeping like a baby, but felt weak as hell the next day until about noon.

Then about a week later, I hit bottom big time. Got suicidal to the point of wanting to just go out in the woods and suck on my pistol barrel.

Now you all know I am not wired that way. That was just not me. Talked to the scary old woman about it and we came to believe it had to be the Ativan.

I got off the damn stuff and after about a day off the crap the problem of deep depression went away.

We all react differently to drugs. If you experience something like I went through simply think back to what has changed in you intake.

I am back to my old crude – rude – tactless – socially unacceptable – and positive minded self. Ready, willing and able to kick cancer’s ****.

Glad you were able to figure out what was triggering the mood issues. I used to take Antivan 30 minutes before I went in for chemo and I would sleep like a baby in the chemo chairs. It helped me catch up on my sleep and relax while being infused with those hateful chemo drugs. But it definitely is not for you.

Sure am glad you and the old woman you live with had that talk. Some meds can cause that much depression, even ones for depression.

Good luck this coming week with the surgery...you know you can't get much more in the way of good wishes, good vibes, prayers, etc. than you get from us here who like you 'crude - rude - tactless - socially unacceptable - and positive minded' !

We will be looking for good news once you get home after the surgery.

glad you figured it out. You are much appreciated here--your fighting spirit, your humor, and your care. So glad you're feeling better too.
I've never taken ativan so I can't speak about how it would effect me but I had a bottle of it in my cabinet "just in case" when my Grandmom died, 'cause I told my doctor I felt like I was just going crazy after she died. (That was 11 years ago and my Grandmom was like our Mother to us; she died of bladder cancer.)

Kerry, so glad you figured it out and took the right steps. I am sooo not a pill popper, never have been. When I first got diagnosed and had a ton of surgeries, procedures and problems, I swear, everyone was pusing drugs, anxiety meds, pain pills, sleep aids etc...I could barely function let alone keep track of all the drugs.

One nurse or case manager said that they just want to make sure I'm in the least pain as possible, that I get the rest I need to fight blah, blah,blah. I'm bad at being consistent with medication anyway (except birth control!) So I never saw any difference. I stopped taking everything except immodium and vitimin D. I dealt with chemo, I dealt with post-surgery aches and pains, all without the drugs. Hell, they ahd me on a morphine pill that about sent me to the edge of hell and back. I threw out the pharmacy a few months ago.

I should have sold them on the street to pay my hospital pils. Damn, lost opportunities suck!

Welcome back. Thank you for sharing about your reaction to Ativan. That is a good heads up for others who may take it or really any drug. Glad you're feeling better. Now go out and kick some butt!
