    Hello-
I've decided to stop taking biotin and let nature do its thing. Yeah, its only been 4 weeks post chemo and I am going blind looking for hair...I just need to be patient and look every other day right-

Healthy hair grows on an average of 3/4" per month. If you are healthy, that is eat well, etc. you should see a good growth in about 3 months. Keeping your head covered does not help the growth at all. The growth is dependent on how healthy you are and what you eat. As long as the hair folicals are getting good blood circulation and nerve endings are healthy the growth will come back. If your finger nails are strong, don't split or not thin, than you are eating good. I added Salmon tabs (Omega3 faatty acids) to my daily diet which has helped in not just assisting in controlling high choloestrol but my nails, hair, and skin are better. I use the Salmon because the Omega3 is better than what is considered junk fish(mackeral, sardines). But be prepared for strange hair. Sometimes the hair comes back first like a new baby's first hair. Soft, curley or wavy, and changes over a period of time. My hair finally settled down to real straight, my reddish blonde is now a funkie grey, but I still have plenty of white, and my hair is standing up straight all over my head every morning.

I have been using the Aveda line of hair products for about a month now and wish I had been using it sooner. At least I am able to manage the Rod Stewart look easier and control it a bit more.

    Peach Fuss also
My final chemo was 5/17 and I also have peach fuzz growing sparsely. I am trying to be patient but I am also looking at my head everyday hoping to see it growing in more and everyday it is like ground hogs day....always the same. I had started putting some olive oil on my head because I heard this helps also and have also been taking the biotin. I don't know if it is helping my hair but I know it is helping my nails. You just don't know if what you see is nature taking it course or if it is something you are using. My oncologist said the products are not going to work...that it will grow back on its own. I also am spending more time at home so I can take the scarf off. It just seems to make sense that it will grow faster if there is nothing on your head more often than having something on it but who knows. You just have to do what you think will help and wait on it to show up I guess. I pray for all of us that our hair returns soon because I know for me it is a big deal as far as feeling better about yourself and how you look and I am sure it is for all of you also. Hang in there....this too shall pass. God bless.

    Hi Lorrie
I decided to stop taking biotin because one, my oncologist said the same thing and that it will grow back on its own and two, the people I've talked to personally who went through this last year or prior say it will grow back on its own. After I wash my scalp I use carrot tea tree oil. Its nice and light and has a pleasant smell to it. So, I can continue to use this as I grow my hair. Yes, we'll have to be patient...But its coming...I can feel it!

    Hey there-
Now I must say, my finger nails are nice and healthy and were quite long, but I always keep them short. I take it biotin is ok if I don't take salmon tabs since I am seeing some results. Then, I'm using Generic tea tree oil lavender shampoo. I got it because I thought it would be very stimulating, but I don't feel any tingling. Though, I've heard its a good product. I also have Shea Moisture products which I plan to use as my product line. Although, I'll run into someone with pretty healthy hair and ask them what products they use, and especially if the products have a lot of healthy ingridients, I'm sold! But, I'll stick with one thing when I find what works best. I had fine hair brownish red. Then, I said I want to make sure I eat whatever my 11 yr old son eats because his hair grows back in less than a week when its shaved off!

    Feeling and Looking Good
    Hey Rene

As long as you eat well, plenty of veggies, fruit, fish, chicken, etc. your skin and hair will be good. It is what you put inside not out side. Good shampoos help remove excess oils from scalp that tend to clog hair folicals and hinder growth. Good diet helps keep blood circulating which keeps folicals healthy. Massage of scalp while shampooing is very important, good massage is great any time....Kathryn

    Olive Oil
Has anyone else heard that putting a small amount of olive oil on your head helps your hair to grow?

    Oil
    Lorrie,

Olive oil was thought to be a good conditioner for dry hair but only coats the hair and cloggs the hair folical which stops growth. The hair folical is coned shaped, has one blood vessel and one nerve ending to it. A hair grows from each of these folicals. The average head has thousands of folicals. A good healthy diet, genetics, and balance in minerals in your system are the secret to good healthy hair. Massage helps stimulate blood flow to each hair folical which stimulates growth. I was having problems with my hair thinning out recently and added an iodine suppliment. I have noticed a regrowth in a couple of areas that were really noticably thinning. We had discontinued using regular table salt that has iodine in it and use sea salt which has no iodine added. Could be the reason for low iodine in my diet. Keep well and healthy, your hair will be back. I really didn't think I was vane until the hair thing. Geeze

    Curly Hair
Boy I thought I couldn't have been so lucky to have gotten curly hair when mine grew back. But that didn't last long. Just towel dry your hair, take you fingers or a vent brush and lightly shape your hair in the direction you would like it to dry. Don't mess with it too much, let it dry and fluff a bit with your fingers or vent brush, spray a bit with hair spray if you would like it to stay and off you go. Eventually you will have your locks back. If I remember right it was just about a year after final chemo my hair was back, and in a full Rod Stewart free style. No hassel here.

Hang in there, the funny spots could be thin for a bit but should fill in, maybe slower than the rest of your hair. I have the same problem, the hair grows slower and is a bit thinner than the rest. But hey, it's better than nothing, keep smiling.

Thanks for the advice. I will stop using the olive oil then and try to salt. I also have gotten some tea tree shampoo and hoping that will help. I know patience is the main factor I just wanted to know if there was actually something else out there to use to speed it up. I have been massaging my scalp also during shampoos.

    Just thinking...
My hair was shoulder length and I hope it will grow back to that length or longer since it will be new and healthy and I know how to treat it now. But, I have seen some cute short hair cuts...Then, because I am sooooo waiting on my hair to grow, I know I won't get it cut, I'll just keep it trimmed into a style as it grows. Never knew how much hair impacted me!

I don't know what it would be like to lose ones hair, as, I didn't have chemo. It sounds like you are doing everything possible rene9 to make sure yours comes in fast and healthy. Good luck to you!

    A little more info
    Rene,

Hang in there girl, your hair will be back soon. Here is a little bit more info. As you massage your scalp, if it moves good during the message your scalp is in good shape and not tight from stress. Tight scalp hinders good circulation for good growth. Massage it good or get someone to treat you to a good scalp rub. You can spend a fortune on hair products, which won't help growth unless you are health, eat well, etc. Your hair is a living organism, just like your finger nails. When hair gets to be close to 2" in length it is no longer a living organism, doesn't receive any benefits from the folical, that is why good hair products help keep your hair looking and feeling good. If your hair previously grew slowly or quickely you can expect the same results. My hair grew quickely before chemo and continued to grow quickely after chemo.
