Mad too!
Sometimes I wonder what is going on with this world! Understandably, she is scared. I would be terrified if I were her. Try calling all of the hospitals in your area and explain the situation to them. I know that around here, they will give free mammograms to what they consider hardship cases, meaning no insurance or money. Contact your doctors directly and see if they can pull some strings too. Exhaust every possible avenue to get her help. You are a good friend to help her out. And, she needs help.
Wishing you good luck and please let us know if you can get her in for a mammogram.

I am about confused about
I am about confused about the "spots" the Dr found in her breast. How were spots detected?
If this is a Free Clinic, is it possible that mammograms are only available a few times a year? Maybe they only have them in October, for BC awareness month. I know that this was the case at a few places in the town I used to live in.
I am in NO way excusing a poor bedside manner of the Dr, and her dismissive attitude! I hope your friend gets whatever testing she needs, and bless you for taking the bull by the horns and helping her. Especially as she is already a cancer survivor, I know she needs to be diligent and a strong advocate for herself. Its so nice that she has you in her corner...does she also have family who can be of assistance in any way? The more the merrier!
Vent anytime, sister!

not even a free clinic and they act like that
I have had 3 mamogams and an ultrasound in 6 months and the one I had yesterday they tell me yep it is still there and you can decide to have a breast mri or just wait around another 6 months for your yearly mamogram to see if it is still there. Why did I bother with the 6 month if they were just going to tell me to just come back in another 6 months if it was still there or not, and then to leave it to me (not the doctors ofcourse) to decide if I need the MRI. I have insurance and pay a lot for these mams and ultrasound and still clueless on what I should do. Cancer runs in my family big time! My Sister,(at 45) and Mother (at 70) both have had breast cancer, my father had prostate, and lung cancer, my grandmothers both had ovarian cancer, three of five uncles had cancer from the brain, stomach and lungs. I had the gene test and amazingly it came back negative, but she said just because my sister and mother had it does not mean I am a high risk which conflicts everything everyone else is posting to include AMC society. I am so confused and hurt because of the non caring attitudes. My insurance will cover the mri and money would not be an issue if it means I can catch something sooner or EVEN BETTER know that it is all good. So insurance or no-insurance there are some clueless people out there that we are putting our lives in their hands, and it is scary. They are no more super human than we are and they make mistakes and sometimes just act like they down right do not care.0 -

Welcome Jax1. You are completely correct and you must be your own advocate. If your gut tells you something is wrong, get it checked out. I have to agree with you regarding exactly what was the reason to come back in 6 months? I would recommend that you find another doctor who is pro-active and one you feel more comfortable with. I'm sorry that there are some numbskulls out there that sound like they shouldn't be in practice. Good luck and let us know how it all works out.0 -
Try the following
Try the Susan G Komen link as well. http://ww5.komen.org/Contact.aspx
Also county hospitals
"Free or low-cost mammograms are available for women without health insurance in many locations. For a program near you, contact the CDC at (888) 842-6355."0 -

I called the ACS 1st thing. The lady I spoke to was just as upset as I am. She is familiar with the clinic the girl went to and they have access to and grants for free mammos. There is really no excuse for them not doing one. She said the girl needs to call back and explain the situtation again and be her own advocate and say " I am not comfortable waiting I WANT a mammo done". She also gave me a couple of other places to try if this does not work and told me to call her back if we have no success.0 -
To everyone
Thanks for the replys, the Dr. found lumps during her exam. I am happy to help her out she is a little younger than my youngest so I am being a Mama to her too! She does have some family in the area but not much. She is married with 2 small children and her husband is very supportive so that helps but she is just so young. The Dr.s bedside manner or lack of really makes me mad with someone this young that has had cancer. I talked to the ACS and have some leads to check up on . I will keep you all posted God Bless

I would go for the MRI. I had one that way you know exactly what you are dealing with and it will pick anything even very tiny in either breast. It is not the most comfortable thind but not painful and will reassure you. Hope to hear from you soon. God Bless

Either way you need a different doc. Go for the MRI and get some answers. Some doc's just keep saying wait 6 mo., don't do it. Find kout now.
To Boppy: There are many places that have free mammograms, does your state have a health dept? As to the doc being rude, I hope not, but I have found in working with the public my whole life, that a lot of young people use the term "rude" not in the way you and I use it...they mean anytime someone tells them something they don't like or understand. Your friend obviously needs more medical attention and she is lucky to have you as a mentor to help her with this. Hopefully it's not cancer but no one will ever know unless she gets further testing.

I would go for the MRI, my cancer was lobular and not detected on mammo, an MRI would have. It was pretty large, MRI for peace of mind.0 -
MAMMOS.......
If you can't find a "free" mammo for her, how bout asking friends to donate say, $5-10.00 a piece for one.......we did that here for a young, 34 yr old mother of 3.......Everyone was more than willing to donate and she got her mammogram......and Praise God, all is well with her!
Good luck!0 -

That is a great suggestion MAJW! Almost everyone can spare a few dollars, especially for something this important. Good luck!0 -
OK now I am on the band
OK now I am on the band wagon too. For me I would be sending a letter to the local AMA and reporting this questionable doc. Just because it is a free clinic doesn't mean substandard care......0 -

I did talk to the local ACS office and found out what she needs to do. I have left her messages today and she has not returned my calls or e mails. I am hoping she is not just scared and will not want to follow through. I am going to call another friend from church tomorrow, if I don't get to talk to her and see if she can help me catch up with her, hopefully I will talk to her or see her Sunday at church. Thanks all for your concern I will keep you posted God Bless

Janice, she needs to keep on top of this and I'm sure you'll be there for her. She's so lucky to have you in "her corner". If the mammogram doesn't show anything urge her to get an ultrasound or MRI. My bc wasn't seen on a mammogram for at least 2 years before it should have been detected. I found it myself and by then it had become invasive and gotten into my lymph nodes. She probably is so scared she may not want to find out but since she's already had cancer she needs to find out about this too. I know that most of us would be willing to chip in a few bucks to help her get the tests and surely your church would help too. You're a blessing to her and I'm sure you'll be blessed for your efforts. Keep posting.0 -

I have a friend who had a lump in back of her nipple and was told by her doc to come back in 6 mo and he would check it again. She went to my surgeon, told him what her doc said and that did not want to wait 6 mo and that she wanted it removed. Which he did and fortunately it was begign. But it isn't always tht way. We have to be continuely vigilant with our friends that they don't just let things go because they were told to "wait".
Of course this doc at the free clinic didn't even want to do a mammorgram if I'm not mistaken. Hope your friend gets the dx she needs and that it too is begign (to me that is the most beautiful word in the English language and cancer free (Dancing with Ned) the second!0
