Vitamin D results
In my opinion, it seems so many of us are low, and that's got to mean something, so I'm now being told to take 1000mg a day and than we'll be checking my levels again in 3 months.
I just wanted to share and add another tool or question for you all to talk to your own doctors about, remember everyone is different and so are their doctors recommendations!
God Bless

Thanks Aurora. It seems that most of us are low in Vitamin D. I try to get in the sun everyday and get mine if possible. So, LET THE SUNSHINE IN! lol
Sue
If you had asked me 6 months ago if I got enough sun for the vitamins D aspect I would of said yes. I mean I run the garden center at Walmart!
I'm out in the sun every day plus I live in sunny San Diego, but after everything I read here, I stated getting curious, so I asked mt doctor to test me, and lo and behold, I am also low.
What got me started wondering was a post I saw here some time back, that asked if others had been tested and what thier results were, and everyone who responded said theirs were low.
I don't know what it means but something to think about foe sure.

Hi Aurora,
I haven't had my D levels checked but I read lots about it and started taking it right away. I see my doc on Oct 31st and will ask for a test. From what I read, what I'm taking is safe for anyone (1000 units). He said there is not toxicity at 10,000 but I'll wait for the test as I don't think I'm THAT low. We'll see. One of my staff members had 2 children in 2 years. She was losing hair and having a difficult time with her skin and other issues. Her doc tested her and everything came out normal except her D levels which were 19. That is extrememly low. He told her 45 would be the goal. I told her that from my reading, 80 - 100 was actually normal. She went back and he checked the updated info and agreed. Good for the doc for checking but do we REALLY need to teach our doctors? The nutritional misinformation that many doctors have is sad. They are educated on a regular basis by the drug companies but I don't think anyone is keeping them up to date on nutritional issues. What were your levels?

My onc recommended that I
My onc recommended that I take Vitamin D3 and Calcium. She said that the reason so many people are deficient nowadays is because so many people use lotions with sunscreens and/or sunscreen when they go out in the sun. I'm a little older than some of you, 55, so that may be the reason for the calcium too.0 -
vit. D
My sister, who has MS-went to her regular doctors appointment. They highly suggested that she start taking daily Vit. D. He then said, "we recommend it for MS patients and for breast cancer patients" - their siblings and children.
I live in Wisconsin. He said that folks in the northern part of the hemisphere are not getting as much sun as folks in the southern portion. Having the vitamin D helps.
When I discussed this with my plastic surgeon, she also had heard about the study and she had started taking hers. I went for my regular 6 month follow up with my regular doctor, and she had bloodwork run for cholestrol and threw in the vit. D check. I've been taking the vit. D since my mastecomy (January); and the tests found that my levels are great....

My oncologist also recommended Vitamin D along with calcium, when he started me on Femara. I'll get my level checked when I see my PCP again. That will be fairly soon. Does anyone know if the chemo-drugs (oral or IV) cause vitamin D levels to be lower?0 -

I got my results over the phone and if I remember right she said it was 21 and that I should be over 30 something, I'm seeing her this coming Wednesday so I'll go over it more when I see her.
This time when I go I want to get a copy of all my test results and computations on reoccurance etc.
I keep forgeting to do that, but she did say she to start taking 1000 units a day and that she would retest me in 3 months.0 -

I can't answer your question about the chemo drugs causing low vitamin D, thats something you have to ask you doctor.
But what the studies are showing is a colilation between low vitamin D and breat cancer. Meaning that most weomen being Dx'd with BC are found to be low already.
I think it's great that some of you have just started taking the vitamin on your own, but remember to always talk to and ask your doctor what they think, I just wanted to put another tool/question on your list.

I posted the link but I don't have it anymore. It was long but VERY infomative. The doctor was teaching other doctors about Vit. D. He also answered some of their questions. He had charts and studies and other convincing evidence. He is the one who set the levels I spoke of in my previous post. I will continue to look for it and post it if I find it.

That would be great, I'll look for it too. I've been away so long, I must have missed the post. Sounds like great info, this is very interesting to me.
