alchohol ablation treatment for thyroid cancer in lympth nodes
Hi,
I would also like to talk to someone who has had this treatment. I live in Seattle and am having a biopsy tomorrow of some lympth nodes in my neck to see if I am a candidate for alchohol ablation treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I have three spots of cancer in my neck that have shown up on PET scans since I had my thyroid removed (Papilary thyroid cancer). One node is a centimeter in size.0 -

GO TO M D ANDERSON CANCER CNTR IN HOUSTON. Dr. Steven Sherman is head of the Endo center there and he is on the board of Thyca also. He talked to me about that treatement as I'm unresponsive to I-131 have had 3 re-currant surgeries since thyoridectomy in Feb 2004 - he said it can be painful as they are unable to tell when they reach the "full" status injecting however there are other clinical trials out there that could be what you need. I really wish you can get to Texas and speak with them as they are 5 yrs ahead of everyone else world wide and I got a "cancer free" checkup in Feb & Aug this year. I still will go back in Aug 2010 and will most likely never get off the yearly check up list - but hey - I'm so glad I went. Topeka dr. said he "had it all" after 2nd surgery - he removed 2 more lymph nodes after original surgery - and some para thyoids - (sept 2006) went to Houston in late Nove 2006 and they found 117 Lymphs full of cancer and then I had another disection in Nov 2008 - and am now on vacation from cancer. So give them a call. You can self refer on line and then they will assign you a team that will get you where you need to go. IT IS AN AWESOME HOSPITAL with all the right info and help you need. hang in there! you'll get through this!! God be with you0 -

I live in upstate NY. I've had a total thyroidectomy and two I-131 treatments, surgery to remove a spot that metastisized on my hip. My TSH recently went from 29 to 121 since May of this year, so in six months it has quadrupled. My scan in May said I was clean when my level was 29. Hard to believe nothing will show in my upcoming scans on Jan 13th and 15th, but if nothing does, I'm finding another doctor for a second opinion. I'm not going to turn my back on this, as the doctors want me to do. To just come back in six months for another blood test to check my TSH. No way. I want answers, options, anything to help me beat this.
So is it Columbia University Hospital? Do you have more info?0 -

I assume they did an FNA and it was definitely a cyst/benign? From what I've read, this really looks like a good route to go with recurrences if you find someone experienced.0 -

Dont know if you found a doctor in Seattle to do this tx, but I'm having it done on a lymph node in Seattle at Group Health end of March. If you did do it, was it painful?0 -

Hi,
I was unresponsive for I-123 and working on finding out what is my next options now. I see "alchohol" ablation is a better option for me. But it looks like Mayo clinic is also doing this now. I see you have to housten MDA cancer center. May I know what made you choose this to mayo?

Alchohol Ablation
I have been receivig the treatment at mayo under Dr. Ian Hay for the last 2 years with great success. I had papillary cancer that has come back on numerous occasions. After a modified radical neck dissection, it came back in 2 lymph node areas. I have had treatment 3 times now with no sign of the cance.0 -

My daughter, now 22, had a thyroidectomy in late 2008, the T-131 radioactive iodine treatment in January 2009 and then a partial neck dissection in April 2010. Her endrocrinologist wanted her to do a higher dose or radioactive iodine and go through that treatment again due to her high TG levels...a therapeutic dose of the radioactive iodine with ultrasound and a PET scan revealed nothing. So, we took her to Mayo last week for a second opinion and saw Dr. Vahab Fatourechi. At Mayo they found two cancerous lymph nodes in her neck and Dr. Fatourechi advised us NOT to do the radioactive iodine treatment but to consider alcohol ablation. Can any one tell me what this entails?0 -

Just found out I have some thyroid tissue and a suspicious node found on ultrasound 9 months after total thyroidectomy, and my endo in Chicago said I have to go back to surgery. Have you had any luck with alcohol ablation at the Mayo clinic? I would like to avoid surgery if at all possible but don't want to risk my health.0 -

Good news that it's been successful for you. I live in Oregon, with an appointment next month at Mayo to see if I would be a candidate for alcohol ablation. I'm wondering if you know or if the doctors at Mayo referred to any other institutions/hospitals/doctors that can do this as well, or if Dr. Hay is the top choice for this procedure? Ideally, someone or someplace closer to home.
Thanks!0 -
