small 3mm Nodule in right lung

Hi Everyone,

I have a question.  I was stage 1a, 1.2 com, grade 2 rcc and i was told that my chances of recurrence were less than 5%.

Yesterday I had my annual scans and I recieved the CT portion back thus far.  All blood looks good.

CT scan reveals two small 3mm solid nodules in right lung, lower and upper part.

I have read or seen over the other post that these could be benign, etc.

Has anyone had these for stage 1 and they are nothing to worry about?

Many thanks

Shecka.

Small nodules on your lung(s) are common both inside and out side the club, I even have a couple. Those under 8mm and which do not grow between scans are considered harmless. You are no doubt scheduled for another chest CT in 3 to  6 months as part of the CYA procedure. You should be fine.

Source Cleveland Clinic:

Countless pulmonary nodules are discovered each year during chest X-rays or CT scans. Most nodules are noncancerous (benign). A solitary pulmonary nodule is found on up to 0.2% of all chest X-rays films. Lung nodules can be found on up to half of all lung CT scans.

A chest Xray will not shoe nodules under 8mm. A chest CT will show much smaller nodules.

Thanks for the response.  Looking at Google can be scary.  I see the doctor on Monday.  I will see what she has to say. I read on the FB page some people went right to chemo. It sounds like that may have been aggressive.

If this is the only thing on your CT Chest scan and the doctor suggests anything more than a rescan in 3 to 6 months, get a second opinion. The doctor may also schedule a follow up scan on  your Kidney.

Did the scan your lungs when they found your kidney cancer or do a chest xray?  Just curious if they had something to compare it to.  Praying for good results!

Hi Spivey, no, I did not have the CT scan at time of diagnosis.  I thought I did but it just was the lung bases or the very bottom of lungs.  Icemantoo, I just had my kindey's and abdomen scanned and all is fine.  Just these two nodules I have.  They are 3mm so very small.  My dr warned me this may happen as CT scans are so powerful they see everything.  I have my appoitment on Monday and will let you know what she says.  I am trying not to worry but it is hard.  I go to UCSF in San Francisco so I am supposed to have some of the best care.  They are RCC specialist.  Not sure why I did not have previous scan.  My tumor was only 1cm and was told chances of it spreading are so rare.

Shecka,

There are things to worry about and there are things to not worry about. Your doctor already told you the CT might pick up some extra lunar material. The doctor  will schedule a rescan to make sure there is no growth. Two 3mm nodules is a perfectly normal finding with or without RCC. The other thing you got going for you is that mets rarely show up for tumors under 4cm and yours was such alittle buggar.

Iceman, thanks for always replying and taking time to respond. My sister's neighbor is an oncologist at Stanford so I was able to get some insight from him. He told me half of the scans he sees have small lung nodules.  He said it is very common and a CT scan is like having 250 x rays so they will pick up on everything.  He noted exactly what you said, given how tiny my tumor was that the chances of it spreading to the lungs would be so rare.  He said that RCC can spread when smaller than 2 cm but he has never seen it.  He has seen it at 3 cm but that too is very rare.

So with that being said, I think you should work for Standford as you know what you are talking about :)

Sheaka,

I only answer the easy questions with pretty close to yes and no answers. My law degree will only take me so far at Stanford.

I also heard that such nodules are very-very common. Most probably your doc will tell you the same on Monday and you will calm down totally!

Thanks Spivey,  I feel much better after speaking with my doctor who I think is great.  She stated that the nodules are very small and that looking at the films she is not worried.  She also shared that in her practice and research that mets to the lungs with a 1cm mass is very rare and she has never seen it. Not to say it is impossible but would be highly unlikely.  She also said she will scan me in 6 months.  She told me not to worry and that everything else was perfect. She actually noted that I had the shortest radioology report she has seen in a long time as there is nothing else showing anywhere.  Amen to that.

Hi I kno this post is kind of older but I came across it and was hoping I could get a response from u. I had a ct scan 6 months ago and they just happen to see a 2mm nodule on my lung well of course I freaked out I was 42 years old and a non smoker I had just got over a bad cough my doc said maybe it was from that or maybe it was just there because they were common but we would recheck in 6 months. So last Thursday I had my recheck and there were 3 more nodules they were 3mm and the 2 2mm was still there but dident grow I am so scared I'm just confused like y r they there. Was wondering how r u and am I driving myself crazy for no reason I'm scared to death! Please respond back if u can thank you!

Tried three different minimally invasive procedures, and were all inconclusive. I just had two of my nodules surgically "wedged" out, along with a small amount of lung tissue, last week. I'm still waiting for the path results. I know it's scary, especially since it's the lungs. Have you been referred to a pulmonologist yet? As Icemantoo said, that's probably the first next step to consider. They can evaluate the best way to go about figuring out what you're dealing with. Good luck, and keep us posted on what happens!

Try sending a private message to them.  Many times people stay for a few months then leave.  A PM notification will be sent to their designated email, which may garner a response.

Good luck,

Jotrzecki,

Get a second opinion or referral with a Pulmonologist if you are not already seeing one. Probably nothing with a rescan scheduled.

HI there,

Mine have not grown and sometimes have disappeared on some CT and sometimes they are there.  It is common to get small nodules, especially after a cough, but monitoring them is good.  You can always PM me. thanks

My pre op CT scan showed 2 on each lung. a 5mm, 3mm and two 2 mm. I had just gotten over a cold. I also had 1 granuloma. My first pist oo scan is in about 5 weeks and if course I've worried this whole time but consider that 2 mm is about the size of a crayon tip. I also posed my concern on the lung cancer page and was told they are tiny and not to stress. The drs will watch them. Of course I will stress anyway. Lol.
