I wonder the same thing. I know it takes prayer, faith, good doctors and good friends to be able to deal with it. It's really depressing, but I've found talking to positive people helps when dealing with recurrence. It's hard to have much of an upbeat spirit when the evil beast comes back.0 -

the doctor's do not know why, if they knew why they could prevent it from coming back and probably find a cure.
why do good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people
we will never know why. we just have to be like the little engine that could and keep chugging along.
with out doctor's we do not live long and with them there will be human mistakes, hell they are only human
being a survivor for many years there is the challenge of being a survivor and survivorship.... it to is not very easy at time.

Good question. I know billions if not trillions of dollars have been spent on a cure for cancer. Research is going on all the time. But you have to wonder, if all cancer could be cured by a vaccine tomorrow, what would happen to the radioligist, chemotherapists, surgeons, drug companies etc. that have so much training on treating this disease. I wonder why only radiation, chemotherapy and surgery are the 3 most common treatments for this disease, some alternative medicines and treatments are not considered even when proven effective. Radiation is not painful but the effects are so harsh their really needs to be more research on limiting the side effects. Connie has lost 25lbs, 20% of her body weight and looks nothing like she did before and she still cannot eat solid food. I have been asked 3 or 4 times if she was my mother, a couple of times in her presence. I love my wife and I took a vow when I married her "for better or for worse" and now we know what that truly means. I appreciate every doctor who has helped us but I wished they had better treatments so patients didn't have to suffer so much. I appoligize if I have offended anyone but sometimes you have to wonder. I had stage 4 tongue and lymph node cancer. Just had my 2nd 3 month check up and all is good. I turned down the surgery and had 35 radiation treatments and 7 chemos. I went to hell and back but am doing great! Get my feeding tube out today after 8 months of enduring that.
Who knows why it comes back in some and not in others? Cancer is a thief for sure. While waiting my turn with the doc yesterday I could over hear him giving the older woman in the next cubicle the bad news that her's was still there. Very tiny, but still, not good news.
I am not a believer in god nor religion but I do believe in getting yourself to the best hospital you can find. Somewhere that treats your kind of cancer EVERYDAY. I went to the James which is an hour and a half from me. I lived with friends. Put my life on hold so I could have a life again.
I dropped from 134 to 98 pounds but have never felt better, I have the energy level of a 21 year old (I am 61) and have my life back.
Just remember that whoever told you life is fair was pulling your leg.
Take control as best you can, surround yourself with good and positive people and also take note that you are the consumer and if you think you are getting bad medical advice, ask for a 2nd opinion and more if needed. This beast can be beat!0 -

That is so true, my husband looks nothing like he did before and lost over 60 pounds and still can't eat. Even his laugh has changed. The cancer treatment has aged my husband by many years. Like you, I love my husband, we have been married for 22 years and I plan on being married to him for many more. He is my best friend!!0 -
What hurts is that my dad
What hurts is that my dad had a 14% chance of surviving treatment/cancer... yet I see people with higher odds that are miserable & want to die.
You want to see horrible treatment? Watch someone who has leukemia.
Yet even the day my dad passed; he refused to give up; never felt sorry for himself & managed to find the good in every day.
The 5th birthday & 6th since diagnosis (spent his birthday week with radical chemo) was the 7th.. I wish the pain of losing him would get easier0 -
MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION
I wish i knew. I was told with my cancer, stage 4B that due to the aggressive nature that there might be a better tha average chance it would re appear and or show up somewhere else. My ENT later told me that his original comment was basd on his personal experience with his patients, but that every patient really needs to be treated induvidually, and so far he is amazed at my outcome.
I think some people mey be genetically disposed to having cancer and also having re occurrencces, which we cannot control. I also believe that if certian lifestyle changes are not made, then one is putting themselves at risk for a re occurrence. IE: Do not quit smoking, or do not drink in moderation, diet ETC.

LOL, ask anyone that has been diagnosed if they think that cancer ahs been nicer to them....
It's not nice to anyone, granted some have more difficulty than others either through diagnosis, recurrence, treatment, recovery, etc.....
But, that's where the old stand-by phrase comes into play.

Not sure why it happens. Until the doctors unlock the genetic codes of the cancers I don't think it will be possible to know for sure.
I can tell you though, meningioma patients (myself included) would love to know why the tumors, which are supposed to be on the lining (meninges) of the brain are also found in the skull base, sinuses, carotid artery, optic nerves, eustacian tubes, etc. We're told we have meningiomas but they act like everything BUT!
I don't think there is any rhyme or reason as to why some people have it metastasize to other parts of the body and recurs. Karma? I don't think so. I am a firm believer in my Faith and I believe that either myself or people associated with me are supposed to learn something from my cancer. Doesn't mean I am happy about it, but I already know that doctors find my case study "interesting" and "intriguing" (their words).
Hope someday someone finds the answer. It would make all of this a little more worthwhile.

It was all over plus the spine & nerves. Horrible

being stubborn is what will lead him to survivorship, so in this case it is good. I know... my mother gave me the stubborn gene.
I too was hit with dam near all the side effects from treatment.

Thank you. It's supposed to get easier; but after 5 years has not because every time I start getting out of my funk; we get hit with another cancer diagnosis. My MIL was diagnosed with breast the year after she lost my FIL; then her son with head & neck (my hub) 2 years after her. He was due for his Pet but had to cancel cause no insurance this month Hopefully he'll have insurance for August. 0 -

It really makes me mad when peolple think because my mother is 83 that we should just give up and allow her to go quietly. I get sooo angry. Older people want to live and want agggressive treatment too. What makes people think they don't want to fight for their lives and want all that can be done. life isn't over till its over darn it!!0
