edited March 2014 in Colorectal Cancer #1
On October 19, 2009, we received the most devastating news of our lives, my husband, Hank, had Stage IV Rectal cancer. He was 61 years old and had spent the last 8 1/2 years in a wheelchair as the result of a stroke. While I fell apart inside, he took it in stride, just as he did everything else. He endured 25 rads without missing a treatment, and handled the Xeloda/erbitux regimen like a champ, even when the erbitux rash got so bad it was in his eyes. He never lost his sense of humor or the courage to fight. His June PET/CT showed and excellent response to treatment, liver mets had disappeared, and his CEA levels were normal for the last for months running.

I took the week of July 4 off to just have a relaxing week at home together. Although we were in the middle of a raging heat wave we had a great week, Hank was feeling good, we celebrated with a small July 4 party and just felt good all around

On Sat night while getting into bed Hank seemed to injure his back. By Sunday the pain was intolerable so we went to our local ER. Scans showed two herniated disks but no evidence of disease progression. His onc, GI doc and PC were there every day and all felt the back injury was an unfortunate bump in the road. By Wednesday his electrolytes were all over the place, by Thurs he was vomiting blood, on Friday he was placed on the palliative care service and early Sat morning my wonderful loving husband passed away in his sleep.

I hate this disease, it took away my love, my best friend, the most important person in my life, in the blink of an eye. I can only say I am greatful that he did not linger for weeks or months in agony, and I know he is in a better place.

To all of you still fighting, fight harder, please don't let this insidious monster win. It may have taken Hank but I truly belive that one day, and hopefully soon, there will be an end to this evil

I am so sorry for your loss. Your husband sounds like a wonderful man, + you were there for him every step of the way. I hope you will find at least a little comfort in knowing I for one will continue fighting + will fight harder. Please know I am thinking of you.

I know you are devastated, but what a blessing that he passed so quickly; it's how I pray I go whenever my time comes! Hank was a fighter and I know you feel blessed to have had him in your life for the time that you did. Be strong and thank you for thinking of us at this difficult time.

    Please accept my sympathy
Please accept my sympathy and prayers of comfort for your loss. My heart broke as I read your story.
I will have PET scan in about a month to see if I am still free of colorectal cancer. I had stage 4 and also mestastisis in the liver. They removed 1/3 of the liver 7/31/09. So far I have been doing okay. God is a healer. I knew He would heal me one way or the other. He takes us through or out.
Tho it was 11/10/08 that I was diagnosed it seems like yesterday. I am thankful that He has brought me this far. My husband has been so wonderful to me. Without his love and tenderness, and the way he cares for me I don't know what I would've done. I know your husband must have appreciated your love to him as well.

    So sorry
    Dear K,

I am so so sorry for your loss... :( My mom was diagnosed Stage IV June 2009 and passed away this past March 2010. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her and miss her. I pray that you feel peace during this sad, sad time.

    Dear K,

I am so sorry you lost your best friend and husband. I, too, am a caregiver for my 61 year old husband David who recently went on hospice care. I know it was so sudden, but it is a blessing he didn't suffer for a long time I am sure you are devastated and will miss him terribly. May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories you have and remember Hank will live forever in your heart.

    Hugs and Healing,
    Priscilla

PS. I hate this disease, too!
