Early May I posted this http://csn.cancer.org/node/191464
I received a lot of support from everyone here and really and truly appreciate it.

A week after I posted this, my father had the endoscopy/biopsy procedure. The following morning he had a heart attack. A new CT scan showed that the tumor in the liver had grown quite a bit, and he had a new tumor growth on his spleen. He spent 3 days in the ER (no ICU beds available in the local hospital) recovering. On the day he was to be released, he suffered a stroke that took away use of his entire left side and made communication extremely difficult.

He made his wishes clear before the stroke that he did not want any heroic efforts to extend his life. He did not want to postpone the inevitable and be dragged along for a few months longer if the quality of life was not going to be what he wanted. All of his kids were able to talk to him before the stroke and we all made peace with the situation and what was to come. The stroke just moved things along much faster than we were all ready for.

We brought him home under hospice care and spent the last 3 days at his side. He left us in the early morning hours of May 12th, just two short weeks after being diagnosed.

Again, I thank all of you here for providing support for everyone dealing with this silent killer. Please don't stop doing this and never give up hope.

I put up a memorial web site for my father and I'd like to share it with you all: www.horstbernhart.com

    when it rains, it pours
Well... just 4 weeks after my dad has passed, my wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Not sure who I pissed off.

She had an exam at her doctor in March, and found a lump on her own at the end of May (just one week after my dad died). She's 32 years old. Ladies... please do your self-exams regularly. This proves just how important it is.

Oh Dextr I agree, when it rains it pours! Wow...you have a lot to deal with. Pray, pray, and pray some more. You already know how to be a great caregiver, now it is your wife you are caring for. BC is one of the most curable cancers. Hopefully she is at the beginning stages. Stay positive, stay strong. Keep in touch. "Come to me all that travail and are heavy laden and I will refresh you." Peace be with you at this time.
