I've been playing phone tag trying to set up a colonoscopy and in the last few days, have developed the same sort of symptoms as pre cancer surgery. Then, I see fresh blood after a bowel movement, in the toilet, not on the paper. I have very bad hemorrhoids right now but am still very scared. My stomach appears to be full of air and I have very painful gas that is difficult to pass. My abdomen rumbles soooooooo loudly. My Stage III surgery was Jan. 7, 2009 and 18 inches of colon was removed (Sigmoid). I'm so very scared. I left a message at the surgeon's office to see if they can rush the colonoscopy! |

Prayers
Diane,
I will be praying for you. I don't have any good answers, just know that this is most likely related to the hemmoroids. Hopefully your onc can rush the colonoscopy and releive your fears. Hang on dear friend.

My prayers are with you too
I hope the onc gets the colonoscopy done in a timely manner. I would hope so with signs of blood. Wishing you nothing but the best...

Take a deep breath
and then when calmed down call your onc and tell him/her what is happening and I'll bet that they can get you a rushed colonoscopy.
I know you are scared. No need to lie and say I wouldn't be, because I would. But the chances are good that it is the hemorrhoids bleeding out.
Hoping for the best for you.

I had no blood or bleeding
I had no blood or bleeding with my tumor, but had real indigestion type symptoms with loud, loud bowel sounds. FOB was negative. Actually, I had an obstruction because I'd used an anti diarrhea med and things got clogged up on the other side of the tumor.
I left a message for the surgeon's nurse. He's a real 'go getter' and a lovely man. I felt he'd be the fastest acting guy....
Please say a prayer for me.

fears
Hi Diane,
I had bright red blood before my colonoscopy in October. The colonoscopy found that I no sign of cancer, and that I did have internal hemorhoids as well as an area of blood vessels close to the internal surface from radiation damage that was bleeding. So, the hemorhoids and anal fissures can definitely cause bleeding.
I know that the worry and risk is there, however, so I'm not discounting your worries. Hopefully, for your own peace of mind, they will be able to do the colonoscopy sooner, and that all will show negative for cancer. Thinking of and praying for you, Diane.

Hey Diane
Just said a prayer for you! I am leaning towards the bleeding being from the hemorhoids too. Or like Lisa said...anal fissures. I just went thru that same thing last month and thats what mine was. I freaked tho and went to the ER. I was too scared to wait but it was beginning of the week-end and I could not get in for an appt. until that Monday afternoon. No way was I waiting!!! You take care and let us know as soon as you can.

The surgeon's nurse is going
The surgeon's nurse is going to talk to him and call me back. He's off today but was coming in for an office meeting. She said it sounds like a bowel obstruction.
Thank you for the prayers. I'll let you know what happens.

ER and bowel prep
Diane,
If you aren't able to get the colonoscopy moved up to tomorrow or Friday at the very latest, I believe I'd also go into ER tonight or tomorrow. I'm wondering though, if you were to go into ER, would they make you go through any bowel prep first... does anyone else have experience with this? I'm just wondering if, without the bowel prep, if they'd be able to see on the ultrasound or CT if there is a blockage or not. Would a full colon interfere with what they could see/do for you in ER? Maybe there's a way they can speed up the prep and do a bowel evacuation, suction, or something like that.
Even if this is the case, if the pain persists and you can't get in for the colonoscopy, I don't think I'd wait. Just wondering if you should start any bowel prep prior to going in. Hopefully someone else with experience going in to ER for a blockage/possible blockage can shed some light on this.
Take care- still praying-

I don't think you should wait,I agree and think you should go in to the ER and get checked. It's probably the hemorrhoids, but why take any chances.Get it checked.I'll be praying for you.

Surgeon sent me
Well, I went in and everyone was sure it was an obstruction but all x-rays showed no problems. He said bowel looked perfectly normal. I'd not had any solid foods for over 24 hours... He did say the tests wouldn't take the place of a colonoscopy and it might be diverticulosis. He really thinks it's my diet and the huge amounts of greens I've been eating and the hemorrhoids. He was not all concern with the spot of blood. Said to use otc for the roids. The pain in my side could be from straining or lifting a large box of Hispanic Bibles and carrying them to the car for the free medical clinic.
The gal who did my x-rays has ulcerative colitis and her husband had cc 6 years ago that had grown thru the wall and entwined itself around his nodes. He's cured but did have a new polyp removed that could have become cancer later.
Also the gal said a gastro who comes to my tiny town is excellent and doesn't have huge waiting periods, Going to call him to schedule a visit and colonoscopy (first since surgery)
Thanks guys.

glad you went in
Diane,
I'm glad you got in and that you don't have a blockage after all! I'm sure you are breathing many sighs of relief and prayers of thanks today.
I feel such relief for you, too!
Hope you can get the colonoscopy scheduled soon, but it sounds like all is well.
Maybe you need to temporarily cut back on the large number of greens and/or even try taking some Beano. Also, there are probiotics that are specifically geared at cutting down gas production in the bowel. They sell them at Walmart in the supplement area.
Have a good day & hugs to you,

Gross Post so beware!
Well, Lisa told me to get Prep H for my hemorrhoids and I had and had started to use them. My roids seem to be WAY smaller BUT........ I think Brooks was right, too. Once the roids went down some, I passed some small, rock hard stool pieces. Maybe I was blocked but right at the EXIT DOOR. Had a small but normal BM after passing the hard stuff. I'm thinking some 'stuff' got stuck in with the hemorrhoids and closed me down.
Going to p/u some ointment to go with the Prep H and take a look at some of those supplements to help me not need to STRAIN to go poo.
Hey, am I the only person who swallows air when they're nervous or anxious? Once I realize I'm doing it, I start doing it almost constantly. That does not help the problem! :-O
Only symptom left is a small amount of gas (or air) and the hemorrhoids. Going to make an appt. with the doctor right here in town. The X-ray gal said when she has a flare up of her ulcerative colitis, the doctor always gets her in the day she calls.

Dear Diane
Please relax, you said it, you have hemorroids, same thing here, let me tell you that since my surgery July 06 I have had at least 4 rectal bleeding episodes, and all my colonoscopies and pet and ct scans have been clear,I understand how you feel because after this happening to me more than once, everytime that happens it makes feel unconfortable, maybe because reminds me of my pre surgery events,it even happened the day before my last colonoscopy in August 09,which was clear, and it hapenned again 45 days after, I told my uncolologist on my 6 months check up that was last Feb 8 and he checked in, himself and told me that he saw an internal hemorroid, beside the external ones that I know I have, prescribed some supossitories and a cream and to see him in 6 moths for my scans, this time was only blood work, my CEA reading was 0.4 so I am not telling you not to get checked or if you are do for a colonoscopy go and get it, but I am sure that your situation is going to be like mine.
I hope that I gave you some peace of mind.

Diane,
I am praying for you. I am glad that your reports have been good so far.
It is terrifying when any pre DX symptoms occur. I have been experiencing the unusual loud sounds in the abdomen for the last 2 weeks. I started Avastin 2 weeks ago and am hoping it has something to do with this. I go to for my second Avastin infusion today and plan to ask the DR about it.

Thanks again Everyone! It
Thanks again Everyone!
It took several days and several bowls of Wheaties and Raisin Bran, but I finally had a normal BM. I may not have had a bowel obstruction, but I sure was constipated (or impacted). In the 12 hours before I had a normal BM, I passed a lot of pebble sized and rock hard pieces of stool. I will NOT let this happen again!
I'm open for suggestions! My usual routine since surgery has been to have my coffee and wait patiently for the urge.... Sundays and Tuesdays don't fit that schedule because of church and Bible Study. That's what set this problem off this week. I couldn't wait any longer and once I miss my morning poo... it's done for the day.
Thanks so much for the poo prayers and good wishes. Gosh have I been miserable!

Well I was told after surgery that if I hadn't had a POO in 3 days to take a mild laxative so I did at first because they said everything was asleep and it would take a few months to get back to normal but not to strain at all. I did for alittle while and now things are awake and working fine...I was taking fiber and it pluged me up...so I threw that away...

diane, are you drinking
diane, are you drinking loads of water?
that will certainly help with making sure your stools stay soft.
the less water you drink, even if you eat lots of healthy food, the more likely you will be to have firmer stools.
sometimes dairy causes constipation too..do you eat any dairy?

Diane, I'm so happy that things are resolving themselves. I don't have enough colon or small intestine to ever have constipation problems again, so I'm not much help. Just know I love you and am praying for your continued good health.
