I have a question for people who have been on Oxy and 5FU and are over treatment. Do your taste buds ever come back?

Thank you for that info-I have been wondering the same-unpleasant taste and texture seem to be getting worse as this goes on. I get treatment 10 out of 12 tomorrow and eating (which was once my second main love-wife #1 of course-in life) has become a real chore. Meat, bread, potatoes and chocolate all are very unpleasant to me THE 4 BASIC FOOD GROUPS. Can do most fruits and canned or frozen veggies -but not fresh. I don't want to eat too much cheese, we all know where that might lead! I've lost 20 lbs. since this started in mid June and it is really encoouraging to know that eating problems might be the first side effect to disappear

Please try to rinse mouth with salt and baking soda water as often as you can, this might help.I put a cup of salt and baking soda water in the bathroom,I remind my hubby to rinse his mouth everytime when he goes to bathroom.I also heard that there is a mouth rinse which is called" magic mouth wash" prescribed by oncologist helps a lot too.

Thanks for the tip! Do you mean baking soda and salt in the same drink? And how much? I've used Mary's Magic Mouthwash for thrush early on, and it worked well for that, but didn't do much for me with the taste-texture is probably the bigger issue with me anyway.

food has been so unenjoyable for 8 months. I stopped chemo last week. I was on a previous 6-week chemo break but tasted buds didn't return, appetite did.

I, too, had the temporary loss of taste from Folfox chemo. My taste DID come back without any problems now. On Folfiri, loss of taste has not been a problem at all for me.

I hear you Brooks. Eating has become more of a chore. I'm on #14 of the same chemo and have one more to go before my PET scan December 8th. Why bother eating if it doesn't taste good. I'm hungry but don't want to eat.

Mine actually is just now starting to come back. Salt and sweet were the only things that I could semi taste and it seemed like I salted everything and it still lacked flavor. I made soup yesterday and it seemed too salty - go figure, so yes, it will come back eventually.

Mine didn't come back for three months and I still have somethings that taste funny or make me gag.

Welcome to Buzzards Deli.... we have everything from Chili to Hot Tamales to Enchiladas to Refried beans to Jambalaya.....everything that a post chemo patient desires . Guaranteed to make your taste buds tingle your dangle dingle and your stomach jingle. This food will not only give you back that famous "run of the mill" feeling but will overwhelm even the strongest of biological warfare that is being waged in your body. Any of these concoctions will not only cure your starvation but will make everything on and in you start working. You pallet will be satisfied , your taste buds will be tantalized....need I say more....so run down to your favorite Mexican Restaurant or chili bar and have a bowl full or a plate full. It will fill your gut and you will taste it......The only thing I could ever keep down during my chemo regimen.....That and Sunkist Orange at room temp...Then 3 weeks after post op chemo go out and treat yourself to the largest chocolate dipped ice cream cone you can find.......Life is good, no matter who ya are........Buzzard

Home made french fries in a flour tortilla and eat it with salsa! Yuumy! Corn tortillas on the griddle with a bit of monterey jack cheese and a dash of tobasco. Collard greens/Spiniach sauted in some onions and garlic, with some banana peppers to give it a kick.

Maybe it was the spice that did it???? It was my sister coming over and throwing things together to find something for me to eat. I also lost 20 lbs, was pretty, thin there for awhile.
