Leaking urine 17 days post hysterectomy
I wear a pad every day & have since I was in my 30's. I started @ first because my periods were so erratic & I would never know when I would start bleeding. Then I also needed it cause I get stress & urge incontinence. But it was never this bad. I went to the rest room & cleaned with toilet paper longer than normal to get every dribble. Went in to make a Phone call, sitting on the couch or just pacing while talking & felt urine leak but not just drops. I did not have to urinate at all & had no urge.
It was like a steady slow stream like when you don't close a faucet all the way. I had to change the pad since it was soaked & I just went 10 minutes before. The weirdest & worst thing was it was like I could not control my muscles. I NEVER had great urine control especially after a c-section & hernia surgery w/mesh, (4 hernias @ one time) but this was something even out of the norm for me.
Has anyone had this happen? I would sure hate to have to go back in surgery. Bummer!

Leaking Urine
On my print outs the doctor gave me before my surgery it said the following. Hysterectomy may carry an increased likelihood of urinary incontinence as a long-term adverse effect. The procedure of hysterectomy can damage the pelvic nerves or the pelvic support structures, either of which may increase the risk of urinary incontinence.0 -
Did you talk to your surgeon/medical team?Michaelynn said:Leaking Urine

I would be sure to call your surgeon and or medical team about this and perhaps they will want to examine you. I know my hospital also has a gyno-urology department as well.

Domina sorry to hear about your problem
I never had any problems with leaking urine. I too think you should call your surgeon, and he will probably recommend seeing a urologist. Have you tried Kegal exercises before? That is when you try to stop your urine stream while urinating. You can also practice these exercises when you are not urinating. This will strengthen the muscles in the perineal area.
Hope you get some relief soon. In peace and caring.0 -

Ty you all for your replies & wishes. Something odd is definetly going on. I am also having pain which I did not really notice before. I can't tell if it's the vaginal cuff or my bladder but I am getting alternating dull & Sharp pains especially when I lift up out of a sitting position. Feels like my vaginal canal or bladder (can't make the distinction) is folded in half or like I am sitting on it. My upper left thigh hurts & feels numb (probably nerve related from removing the lymph nodes) but no swelling. Then there is the leaking urine. It is just flowing out of me with out sneezing, coughing or laughing. I tried kegeles but I guess I have to do a million a day. I think my bladder is shot. I don't feel like I have a fever or anything, none of this happened when I first came out of surgery. It is almost 3 weeks later. Weird. I am going to call my gyno-onco to see what she says. Thank you all, peace & health to all.0 -

I would make sure to call right away. You may want to even page them tonight and tell them what is happening. They may want you to come to the ER and be checked.
Take care and keep us posted.0 -

Your problem is definitely not insignificant. This you should definitely check with your Docs. I can't imagine what that is like to be experiencing such discomfort all the time. Hope all goes well! June
June & everyone,
I called my gyno-onco & the onco nurse said to come in without an appt.& do a urine sample. I did go in & the pain was increasing steadly all night long & continued while I was there, it hurt so much I was bent over & shuffling. I don't even think I was in this much pain after the hysterectomy. Also the urine was still streaming out & there was alittle blood in the urine. She took the sample & said it sounded like another UTI. She let me leave & said she'd call in an antibiotic & pain killer to my pharmacy. I went bk to work, she called me bk, no UTI, no infection, the doc wants me to come in wed morning. They don't seem to know what it is or if they do they are not telling me till onco examines me.
When I was giving the onco nurse the sample I asked could there be a hole in my bladder or urether & the nurse did not think so.?????????
So now still do not know what it is.
Ty for all your concerns. I will keep all posted when I see doc. Peace & Health!0 -

OK this really gets me going. You have extreme pain, bleeding and profuse urinary leakage. That does sound like a fistula or something serious.
When they said to come in on Wednesday what did they tell you they would be working you up for?
What diagnostic testing would they be doing and what are they suspecting is the problem?
They should have picked up the phone and gotten you an appointment that same day with a urologist or oncological urologist.
Please call your doctor's office back and push for an appointment for Tuesday not Wednesday. Sorry, but I can't stand it when the medical system fails to facilitate between specialists. It's called care coordination and it is what is so sorely missing in our health care delivery system.0 -

If you're in pain, symptoms continuing to get worse, please call oncologist's office and see if you can get in today. If that doesn't work, tell them you're going to plop yourself in the ER because you cannot wait any longer for medical attention. It may be that your doctor is in surgery all day today, or doesn't have clinic on Tuesdays, and Wednesday is the first day s/he can see you. Doesn't matter - someone needs to take a look at you.

Thanks 4 the posts, the Dr. was not in today so I have a 9am tomorrow. The leaking has eased up a bit, but the urine is tinged w/blood & there are a lot of dull deep pains but most are shooting acute Sharp pains that feel like a tearing or a stabbing. It is all too hard to tell if this is bladder or vaginal cuff related since ya know everything is in the same general area, what ever it is, it is not normal I know that. Wish me luck do not know what she is going to do tomorrow but just looking or touching my outer stomach where the laproscopic holes are is not going to DX anything, the hole look really healed although I know I am not there yet but they look good.0 -

Domina,
Please get to the doctor or surgeon for this as soon as possible. I would consider going to the Emergency Room-they will do any tests that are needed, like a ct. I am not a doctor or in the medical field, but I did experience a bladder tear following my radical hysterectomy which required a 2nd surgery.
Best to you and keep us posted.0 -

KAREN, hopeful girl 1 & All:
My gyno-onco's ofc. is located inside the cancer center inside the hosp. So I did not have to go to my car & drive a million places. I was there for 6 hrs. She looked @ laproscopic holes & did a vaginal exam, rectal & looked around external urinal opening & put in a catheter & filled me up w/blue dye. She said I might have to go home w/ a urine bag taped to my leg w/constant catheter. They took 3 diff cat scans, the 2nd two they had to fill up my bladder twice. They thought I had a hole or tear in bladder or urether or vagina. Finally no holes, no tears, no going home with wearing a bag of urine taped to me.
Said after they took out the lymph nodes from the hysterectomy, usually the lymph fluid
gets stuck in the leg causing swelling or re-absorbed in body. My lymph fluid is accumulating in my pelvic area & the faucet like leaking was lymph fluid not urine & it was leaking thru the not healed yet stitches on the vaginal cuff & coming out the vagina. Said my stitches look good but liquid can still escape & won't be healed for over 4 months. Said that was why even after I emptied my bladder it was coming out & I could not hold it. It was not urine & was coming out vagina. I have some bleeding in catheter today & the pain is easing up. I just hope this for not happen again. Ty you all, u all supply so many wise words, prayers & support.0 -

Hello Domina,
I had the same thing happen to me just about 1 or 2 weeks after my hysterectomy. I had my hyst. Sept 11, 2008 and had to wait for the leaking to stop and the incision to heal before I could start my radiation. I was able to get my 1st radiation treatment Oct 31, 2008. I am sure everyone is different, but I was hoping it might help to hear that someone else had the same thing happen and that it didn't take 4 months to heal. Hoping and praying that you will heal quickly.0 -

Ty for your posts & concerns.
When I first had the symptoms I would look up "urine leaking after hysterectomy" on internet & found articles & blogs of women w/cancer & w/o cancer & how all had to have surgeries to do bladder repairs etc.
Now that I know it was lymph fluid coming from vagina I entered that & found really a lot of articles/blogs that other women had the same thing happen. I spoke to someone who had breast cancer also & after lumectomy & lymphs removed they had lymph fluid build up in breast & it was pouring out of the stitches on the breast. Thank God no other surgery was needed for me & it looks like it will be ok & I know what it was. Ty u all0
