Thought I would post something about my husband Keith's condition. Last time I posted we were just starting out on this-what seems to be the longest trail of our life. He has been a trooper through everything. Within weeks he had a port, imaging, aspiration biopsies, an ileostomy and a ton of tests. We have covered the gamut of possible therapy and it was finally decided that he start with two courses of 5FU before he does chemo and radiation. The field that needs to be radiated cannot be completely covered as it is now, so they hope to shrink some of the sites and see if they can get a better result. All this seems so very, very confusing to me. He seems to know too much.
The first course of the chemo started on Monday. He saw his own patients every day until today. I worried he was going to overdo it but he said it gave him something to look forward to. Today though he is really wiped out. On top of all of this I have one of our twins home with a cold. The little one is a snotty mess and I have a cold as well-I swear I got it at one of the hospitals we have been to in the past few weeks. I am afraid to get near him. His stomach really bothers him and the only thing he wants is a milk shake which he can’t have because the cold bothers him. I told him I would warm him up one in the microwave if he wanted it-he passed. Does anyone have any suggestions on good food ideas? I want to make him something that will taste good and give him energy? Thought I would ask.

Sarah

    yep..............
chili was a staple for me , anything spicy was great, it overwhelmed the nauseated feeling I kept during chemo and radiation...Dr Pepper is great warm ...an old standby for me was Sunkist Orange warm....or Ocean Spray Crangrape drink again warm...
My whole taste and wants changed but eventually returned to normal after radiation and chemo was done....all cold issues disappeared after 3 weeks of stopping chemo as well...The very first thing I celebrated with was that faithful...."MILKSHAKE"..........tell him to hang in there , its only a heartbeat away............Love, Hope, and Dairy Queen......Buzz

OH OH OH !!!!....lukewarm watermelon..........was the absolute best !!!

For nutrition/calories try drinks like Ensure Plus or Boost, etc
at room temperature.....Pretreatment eating habits will resume ,with time.....What I craved most doing chemo that had to await its end was a nice cold glass of water......steve

    chocolate Boost, in the mic
chocolate Boost, in the mic for about a minute, sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top. It saved me when nothing else would

I know the milk shake craving- mine was root beer floats by the truck load

as long as his mouth isn't sore (yet), chips in the oven with cheese and picanto sause- was a surprising treat that went down well.

soups, try a cream based one, something thick, like a puree. I couldn't tolerate anything with stuff in it, but sometimes was able to get calories in through soup.

    oh the other thing Sarah-
oh the other thing Sarah- the only time my white blood count tanked was after my first treatment. I went in for treatment number 2 and it was cancelled due to low counts. By that night I was hospitalized with a blood infection, that time I was in for 5 days. Never had an issue with it again, but I also bleached and lysoled the heck out of everything I came in contact with- not easy since I am a teacher. Just a heads up, to definitely stay clear of him and make his environment clean. He sees patients? Is an MD? I would be very concerned about the germs- seriously oxi is murder on the WBC

    This is my first experience
This is my first experience with radiation, but it does murder on your taste buds. But it seems to come back after a few days of being over. I want smoothies all the time 'but that's just me. I also want as many sweets as possible. And since I don't eat much at each time, I'm always hungry. I already have my list of meals when I get back on line!

    Hot chocolate?
I don't suppose he would like some type of hot chocolate and marshmallow mixture? My comfort food has always been undercooked bacon but I know that not everyone can handle bacon on an upset stomach (or even like it). Twice-baked macaroni and cheese was always a winner for me too.
And, warm Coke was great when I was nauseous.

I hope you find that magic food that will tempt him and make him feel better too.
