Susafina Question for you-how did your thyroid check go?

Sue,

Hi there.

Per your last post, you had a thryoid appt on Wednesday to check and monitor. How did that go for you?

Please let me know how you are doing.

I was able to get my thryoid evaluation appointment moved up to 1/13/11, so I am glad I will not have to wait until the end of the month for that appointment.

Hugs,
Cindy

    Throid check
    Hi Cindy,
My thyroid exam went well thank goodness. No changes. My doc wants another ultrasound to make sure the nodules stay the same size. I have one on the right side and two on the left. He told that eventually the throid will need to be removed but not anytime soon unless they change. I asked if they changed would I have to have another biopsy. Hw said no that it just should be removed.
He assured me that He was lowest on my lists of priorities and that we would watch and wait. He wants to see me in 3 months unless the ultra sound says somethuing different. All of my thyroid functions tests are normal. He told me that I should get in the mindset that surgery is the only option. But I told him How can you get your mind ready to have someone slit your throut open? He laughed I didn't. He assured me that the scar would not even be detectable, sure that is easy for him to say.
Needless to say I really am putting it on the back burner of a totaly different stove!!!
I am glad you got your appointment moved up. The waiting is so annoying!!

Your comment made me laugh-putting it on the back burner of a totally different stove. You are a funny one!

Why does the surgeon feel that the thyroid must at some point be removed? If the nodules remain the same size, and are non cancerous-why remove? Is your thryoid itself enlarged as well?

I would feel as you do, if stays the same to just leave it. Is the thought process that it is better to have the surgery at a younger age than to have to have it later in life?

If it is not causing you any discomfort or pressing on windpipe why remove?

I am guessing since my evaluation appointment on Wednesday is with a surgeon that he will want to remove as well. I would imagine I will need a fine needle biopsy and or scan as well first. But I would prefer to be able to do like you and monitor. I am very nervous about the appointment. I hope everything turns out ok with mine, like yours has.

    Hey Cindy,
I think that the doc was explaining that eventually it will get bigger. That is why he told me to get in the mind set that it will have to eventually be removed. You are right he said that he much rather remove it at a younger age than wait till I am 80 and a surgical risk. I said doc when I/m 80 you will be 80 as well and I won't let you operate on me!!
I have good feelings about you since we seem to be going through a lot of the same stuff. I think that you will need a biopsy, but I know it will be fine. Just make sure that they do it under ultrasound so that they get the right spot!
Good luck on wed I will be thinking about you and let me know how your appointment goes. I just know that it will be good!!

    Sue,

You are funny-telling the doc by the time you are 80 he will be as well and you won't let him operate. That's cute. Did you doc ever suggest the radioactive cocktail to kill off your thyroid rather than surgery? That is something I have read about as well. Or are we not good candidates for that after having our pelvic radiation?

I feel a bond with you as well-our cases are so similiar. Wednesday is my apppointment, but it is just an evaluation. I think you are right-he will need a needle biopsy (guided by ultrasound). So he will likely schedule that with me.

I hope you are right and mine can be monitored like you. I feel like my body needs further time to gain strength as my last chemo was November. Last year was alot-two surgeries, 6 chemos, 25 radiations---my blood counts are still coming back up....I don't feel like I would want to be having a surgery right now.

I am really nervous though-I can't deny it. And with not working, it gives me too much time to worry.

I will let you know what I find out.

When is your thyroid ultrasound scheduled for? Is that something you are going to do now?

    Hi Cindy.
I just read your other post. Sounds like everything went well. I am so glad for you. Your Doc sounds like a good one. They will do the biopsy and it will put your mind at ease.
It really isn't bad. I did not have any numbing medicine and it was bearable and very quick.
They say that surgery is the only option. Especially if there is a malignancy. The treatment for cancer is a compound called Iodine 131. It is a radio-actived isotope that you drink. But we will not have to worry about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My ultraspound is scheduled for monday the 17th, Even though I know it will be fine I STILL GET REAL NERVOUS. I guess it happens because we all have had scans and such and received bad news, so we expect the worst. I really hate living from scan to scan. I will never get used to it.
    Hugs back to you,

    Sue,

Hi there and happy Friday to you.

Good luck with your thyroid ultrasound on Monday the 17th. I am sure the nodules will either be gone, or remain the same in size.

I know exactly how you feel, living test to test, CA125 to CA125, scan to scan is very scarey. I too, will never forget in the beginning when diagnosed how every test showed more and more bad news. I guess that sticks with us-and each time we need testing we can't help but remember that.

I think we will both be fine.

Try not to let the worry ruin your week-end, I know that is easier said than done!
I am already nervous about my fine needle biopsy on Friday the 21st.

We have to put our worries in God's hands.

I think of you ofen and it's nice that we have this connection in similiar journeys.

I too feel that we have developed a strong bond. It is such a support to know that there are people going through the same stuff as I am. Today is my scan and I will be glad when it is over. I will let you know the results. I have to have a CA-125 next month and I am already worried about it. Crazy isn't it!!
I hope that your week goes well too. Talk to you soon!

    Cindy, is the thryoid
Cindy, is the thryoid something that has to be tested when one has uterine cancer? I'm sorry to be so stupide but I'm asking for my sister in law who was recently dx with uterine, well actually endometrial cancer. The cancer started in the uterus and traveled to the ovaries. I know nothing about this type of cancer and would appreciate any light you can shed on it for me.
I pray you will all be healed of this nasty beast and will keep you all in my prayers.

    Debbie Jean,

I am not aware that the thyroid is something to be checked following uterine cancer, and I am told that the thyroid is not a place that uterine cancer is known to spread to. Although there have been a couple of other people on the boards, that were also found to have thryoid nodules as well.

I was diagnosed with cancer in Feb 2010 following an endometrial biopsy at my gyno's office. I had been experiencing heavy bleeding for a long time, and I was starting to have pain in my pelvic area-I thought all of this was from my fibroids. I then had a series of tests-ultrasound, needle biopsy, ct, pet scan etc.
I also went for a second opinion, and opted to have my surgery and continued care with the 2nd opinion doctor.

I had a complete hysterectomy and removal of everything including ovaries (cancer had spread to ovaries) and some aorta lymph nodes. I also had a vascular repair, as one of the lymph nodes was growing into the vasular system. I was dx as 3C.

I had a second surgery a week later for a bladder tear, so my recover was longer than usual from surgery.

In May 2010 I started chemo (carbo/taxol), and I had the sandwiched therapy plan, 3 chemos, 25 radiations, and 3 chemos. Chemos were three weeks apart. I was told the chemo was working because my CA125 number following surgery was 300, and after the first chemo it dropped to 20. My CA125 number was a 7 per my last test. A normal CA125 number is 0-34 I believe.

I need to have the needle biopsy for thyroid nodules this Friday because during treatment I was to the emergency room for super swollen glands around jaw, and when they did a ct of the area it showed an "incidental" finding of thyroid nodules. My oncologist said that nodules were very common, most benign, and that we would follow up on this again at the end of treatment.

My last chemo was in November, but it took weeks and weeks for my blood counts to come up to a higher level following the chemo, so I didn't go and have the thryoid ultrasound until December. I was then sent to a thyroid surgeon for evaluation. He read the ultrasound results and did an exam on me. I have three nodules, and he wants to biopsy two of them. He said only 5-10% of nodules are cancerous. He thinks they will be ok, but there is always the chance that cancerous tissue can be found.

These boards are a good source of information and support.

I wish the best for your sister-in-law, and am sorry that she too is now going thru' this dx.

    Sue,

Hi. Glad yor scan went ok. Let me know when you receive the results.

Tomorrow (Thursday) I go for a mammogram because I have never had one, and I am 47, so my oncologist ordered one for me, I have been having alittle discomfort under the right breast and it kind of goes around to the back shoulder blade. I did have a PET scan last year though, that scanned from the knees to the neck, so the breasts would have been covered in that scan and that didn't show any breast issues last year.

Then this Friday, I have my thryoid needle biopsy on two nodules.

    I am nervous.

Let's pray for both of us for good results.

    HiCindy,
I just found out that my scan has not changed. Thank Goodness!! But when the office called to tell me they said that one appesrs a little smaller. Talked to the MD and he told me that I should get my mind set that eventually it would have to be removed. He said as long as it doesn't get bigger I can wait. The nodules remain the same size so that is good news.
So I know for a fact that yours will be negative too!!!
I am glad you went for a mammogram and that it was normal( I read your other post) YEAH!!!
I had one not too long aga that showed 2 nodules but was nothing. Here we go again more worries!!! I will just be followed closely. My docs now insist on a colonscopy! Those docs seem to always find something for me to do. It is not scheduled till APRIL 1st Appropiately for April fools day. It never ends!

    Sue,

I am so glad to hear your scan was the same. That sounds very positive to me that one appears alittle smaller. Who knows maybe as time goes on they will shrink.

A colonscopy. That does not sound fun. Tests are no fun. My thyroid biopsy was actually quite unpleasant for me. I think my radiologist was newer. She looked pretty young.

I am told I will have my results mid week to end of week.

    Have a good week.
