...she was hospitalized yesterday evening for pneumonia ('the old man's friend'), dehydration, a UTI, and a general confusion behavior(more than likely from the other stuff).

Naturally, I am over 5500 miles away, so all of my conversations start with 'so, what time is it there?'. And yesterday was the day that I got the news, 4 years ago, that my daughter died...sigh...I usually avoid answering the phone on that day, but something told me to check my voice mail...

She is by nature a fighter, but seems to be flagging. If you can send up a prayer, I would much appreciate it!

Dutch hugs, Kathi

Update: Just got off the phone from mom's nurse. She said that mom is a bit better, now that she is being hydrated, but still very confused. She doesn't see the need at this time for me to hop a plane. They are still running tests to make sure they have already found all that is to be found.

I KNOW that it is all the wonderful vibes you, my sisters, are sending up!!! Thank you, each and every one of you!!!!

Mom is a breast cancer survivor, just like we sisters are...just a bit more 'seasoned'...ROFL!

I am sending my love to all of you. I will keep you posted!!!

BIG dutch hugs, Kathi

She is, like me, a double cancer survivor...breast and endometrial. And 87 years young. I'm hoping for the best...but ready to call KLM for an emergency flight to be by her side...sigh...

Kathi .. I am sincere in offering .. I can drive down
to check on your Mom for you. My head cold has lifted (finally after 9 days), so I can go and check out the situation for you .. Honestly. Please let me know ... I am just a hop, skip and a jump from Redlands .. this is what we do for Sister!

I have a 4 hour window in which I need to be home on Tuesday - awaiting a delivery from Pacific Sales .. otherwise I am free .. Monday/Tuesday.

Please PM me .. and I'll jump right on it .. I would not offer if I could not do it.

    Prayers, Peace and Strength ..

    Thank you, Merlyn!
I have used the KLM 'family emergency' option before, when Hans' mom passed. They are very good...the flight is long, but I can be by her side within 24 hours of whenever I need to! Thank goodness for these kind people!

    Aw, Bella Luna...thank you!
It is a bit of a tough day...and doesn't look like my memories of it in the future are going to be any better!...*smile*

But, it is what it is...I guess it's my role in life...and I do keep everyone in my heart!

    Thank you so much, Linda!
I KNOW your prayers are working! Her nurse just said that she is 'perking up a bit'. They are so nice in this hospital...and are trying to make it as easy as possible for me, being so far away (and 9 hours later!!).

    So glad to hear
that your Mom's situation had improved.

It's hard to be far away when something happens.
How sweet of Vicikisam to offer to check on your
    Mom for you.

THIS is what keeps me coming back to this board
the humanity of my sisters and their selflessness.

    Prayers and UTI's
You've got my prayers for sure.

Confusion is often the presenting symptom in an elderly person with a UTI. Just FYI, after my mother-in-law did this a couple of times and ended up in the ER both times, we added a cranberry capsule (you can find them at Wal Mart or any drugstore with the vitamins) to her daily meds. Cranberry changes the lining of the bladder so that it is much more difficult for bacteria to adhere--kind of like "teflon-ing" your bladder ;-).

My mother-in-law has never had another UTI. Don't add cranberry if there's a history of kidney stones and, of course, always check with your doctor.

    Kathi,
I am so sorry to hear

    Kathi,
I am so sorry to hear about your mom but glad that she is making some progress. It must be so frustrating to be so far from her even though you know you can get there quickly. But we can't be by their sides 24/7 and they wouldn't want us to be either. I will keep you in my prayers and good thoughts that she continues to make progress and is on the mend soon.
