Possible hernia ??

Hi Everyone,

Well, we think **** has a hernia. His stomach has a weird shape, especially when he does sit-ups. After talking to some folks it sounds like he shouldn't have been doing situps and lifting weights like he is after the open surgery in May 2010. When he does sit ups it looks like a triangle right below his ribs sticking out. At first I was freaking out worrying about ascites but I don't think it is that. He'll go to the doctor next week. He is not looking forward to another surgery but I guess we are getting ahead of ourselves.

He wants to know what recovering from hernia surgery is like. Anyone?

Aloha,
Kathleen

    Aloha Kathleen,
    I am

    Aloha Kathleen,
I am currently recovering from Hernia Surgery that I had on December 9th. I herniated all along the incision site as well as the illeostomy site. My resection was done in Feb 09.
I had the hernia repair done laprocospicaly, and because of the multiple sites I received 8 small incisions in a circular pattern on my abdomen. I spent 2 nights in the hospital. The recovery is no where near what it was with the resection. I was told the recovery time will be 4-6 weeks. I really don't think I am going to need the entire 6 weeks. I am sore, but I don't even have staples, all the tiny incsions were closed with stiches and steri strips.
I felt well enough to start "back to work" from home about 10 days afer the procedure. Other than the soreness and moving slow, it really has not been bad at all. what else can I answer for you?

    Hi Kathy
    Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the update. **** is just feeling stronger so he is not happy with what we think is a hernia. As we find out more, I will be asking more questions.
I'm glad you are feeling good. :)

However 8 + weeks of no lifting.
I had to wear a binder for 6 weeks, and had 8+ weeks of no lifting,no exercise that could possibly stress the area (no kayaking this summer.) I was sore for a long time, but now I'm doing everything.

I had no stitches or steri-strips - he used glue, and I had the full open incision, from just below my navel to my pubic bone. He also used the opportunity to look around, and see if there was anything ugly going on (no) plus repair my initial scar, which had healed badly.

I'm told that the open surgery is actually less painful than the laparoscopic, as they have direct access to the herniated area. It's not the incision that hurts, it's what's going on inside.

If **** insists on doing sit-ups, have him make sure to wear strong belly support. I curled with my hernia, and wore supportive runner's tights with extra abdominal support.

    Yikes!
That sounds like something from the movie Aliens.
Tell **** to go easy on the sit ups. **** recovered from his surgery a lot quicker than I did from mine. Mine was in April and even thinking about sit ups makes the area where my ab muscles used to be hurt! My wound still hasn't totally healed and I have a hernia right underneath the scar. I'll have to take care of it at some point in the future.

Tell **** that if he wants to push it, he should save it for the impact zone where it really matters. (If it weren't for cancer, I'd never know cool surfing lingo.)

Speaking of surfing, your Christmas Day surfing tradition is totally awesome!!

    Merry Christmas.

I had 2 hernia repairs- one
I had 2 hernia repairs- one like 15+ years ago on my hyster site and the other about 18 months ago on my ostomy site. Neither surgery was a big deal- truly after recovering from resection and take down surgery, hernia repair was a piece of cake. The hyster site needed to be done. I teach and was on my feet all day- close to the middle of the day my gut just ached and ached. The ostomy site was more a visual thing for me, it stuck out, it was lumpy, blah blah. My colorectal surgeon said it was a patient preference for repair, that they are not considered a priority unless they hurt. I was glad I had it done. In the hospital 1-2 nights? Can't remember. She prepared me for potentially staying in a week, all depended on how much if any manipulation of the colon she had to do. Thank God NONE was needed.

    Kathleen:
George has the exact same thing, in fact, if he lays flat and coughs, it sticks up in a wierd shape. PA said it is a hernia but we are not doing anything about it since George is in active treatment and it is causing no problems. I think he should wear some kind of band/girdle but PA over road me, again, and said not necessary. I think she is wrong.

Take care and Merry Christmas from a freezing/snowy Michigan - Tina

    G'day Kath and ****
My original surgery was from sternum to groin. I have two hernias one just above my navel and one at the top just under my sternum. All my docs have noted them but they don't seem worried so why should I. The only trouble I have is when I lose weight the top one catches on my sternum and pops in and out ,really weird. Have a wonderful Christmas,,Ron.

    Mine actually did not cause
Mine actually did not cause me any pain, it just buldged at the ostomy site and about 3 hours before I had to go tho the bathroom, it got bigger. If it had not been so noticable I might not have had it corrected, but I am a bit vain. It was obvious even in clothing. If it had only been visible when I was naked I could deal with it, as my abdomen is ugly now anyway, but when it started to affect me clothed? well. I had to do it!

    Hi Kathleen and ****, Sorry
Hi Kathleen and ****, Sorry about the problem. I have a hernia and it causes me no real problem except when I cough hard when a bit sick. I had to hold my hand over it so it doesn't protrude. Lovely hu! My doc here had my surgeon look at it. They said since it is not causing any problem to leave it. They also said if it really caused me pain to go right to the er as they would need to fix it right then! nO problems though. Just be safe and talk with you doc. Hope you have a wonderful new year.
