in a study comparing six countries (Canada, Australia, Sweden,Norway,Denmark and the UK).One cancer type mentioned was colon cancer, tho the only specific citing was "Colon cancer five-year rates have gone up in Canada and further rises are expected....." tho no figures given.....

Australia, in same study, did even better in regards to colorectal cancer, as per the Sydney Morning Herald, which stated:"Survival rates at five years for colorectal cancer in Australia were 66 per cent- 12 percentage points more than in Britain......"

Study originally published in "Lancet"

    From an Aussie....
    Hi there,

I seriously doubt it's because Australia has better health care, my father has recently had a rectal cancer recurrence and we have had to go overseas twice now for cyberknife, which has cost us in the vicinity of ÜSD60,000... I would say Australia has better survival rates due to being diagnosed earlier, therefore having less stage 4's than other countries? Also, you guys have drugs such as Avastin approved earlier than what we do...

We recently had the government mail out a poop test for everyone over 50, that's where we exceed, in early detection, have no doubt about it, the health care is better in the US (I lived in the US for 4 years and know that you guys are indeed fortunate when it comes to health care, although your insurance sucks, hehe)!!

The American Cancer Society has recently put out
"Cancer Facts and Figures 2010" as well as "Colorectal Cancer Facts & Figures 2008-2010".

Good point about earlier dectection in Australia as one explanation for better survival than elsewhere; had read study done on various areas of Spain with figures similar to those of US....steve

    Not understand the rankings!
for example Spain is ranked as the 7th best universal healthcare (i can agree with that) in the world but has worst ratios of general survival cancer ( except for breast and lung where is leader) than Canada that ranks only 30 th ( despite I don't believe it).Another strange thing: Morocco ranks better than Canada USA and Denmark!, we know very well Morocco ,just 25 miles across Gibraltar strait!Listen, Health care just does not exist there, just poverty ,one of the poorest countries in the world!.A third trick in this case Countries better ranked than Spain are Andorra , San Marino or Singapore all of them countries with just a few thousands habitants , and , at least in the case of Andorra ,with just one Hospital ( grave cases are addressed by helicopter to Barcelona). So statistics are always easy to be manipulated and difficult to interpret!.
