Mayo Clinic - recommendations for oncologists/surgeons?

Hello...

My family discussed the idea of pursuing treatment at Mayo Clinic for my father. We will not know his stage until Thursday so we do not yet know what direction his treatment plan will go yet, but we are trying to get some ressearch done while we are waiting.

If there are names of oncologists or surgeons there that anyone could share to add to our research list we would be very grateful.

    Hi Dana, My husband had surgery on August 16th with Dr Wigle at Mayo in Rochester, MN. If MIE can be done he does a robotic assisted, minimally invasive surgery. My husband is 57 and was diagnosed with T3N1M0 on March 31st. Started with chemotherapy of Cisplatin and Irinotecan and radiation added. Surgery in August with one of 27 lymph nodes still having cancer cells. He had surgery on Monday and was released from the hospital on Friday. His was classified as robotic assisted, minimally invasive, Ivor Lewis. He is currently on a post op chemo of Oxiliplatin and Xelox.

    We were very happy with Dr Wigle in every aspect. He is very experienced with esophageal cancer. The 6 thorasic surgeons do over 200 esophagectomies a year. We were told they are just divided between all six doctors. Not all of the doctors do the minimally invasive, but I know Dr Wigle does.

    Another member from the board is having his surgury at Mayo Clinic, with Dr Wigle, tomorrow. I have been thinking about him and will pray his surgery goes well and he has a quick recovery.

    The more you know and the more you research the better. Ask questions of those on this site. They are among the most experienced and are so willing to help. They are full of information that is so helpful.

    I would certainly add Dr Wigle to your list. The choice will be yours, wherever you go, but you will know when you find a Dr that is the right fit for your Dad. Others here have doctors that have been wonderful for them and hopefully will have some more recommendations for you. Linda

    Sorry to hear about your dad. Many of us here have gone thru similar shock. I was diagnosed last Feb. Was staged 2, N1. M0. I had surgery at Mayo, Mn in March. My surgeon was Dr Deschamps. I had the Ivor Lewis surgery. It was successful and I was very happy with the staff at St Mary's hospital. Chemo followed the surgery for 3 months. It is a tough surgery and chemo but I am doing well, had a clean scan in Sept. and am very grateful for this miracle season of Christmas. God be with you as you make these decisions for your loved one. We are all here to help and support.
