Hello... my father has been fighting Stage IV EC for a year. Over the past month, he has lost 30 lbs, become extremely weak and sleeps most of the day -- there is one tumor in his liver that the chemo/radiation has not impacted. Last night he started vomiting bile and now has blood in his urine. He was taken to the hospital this morning and I wanted to see if this has happened to other people with EC. We have been fortunate that during this entire journey he has not suffered from pain. I wanted to see if anyone had any experiences with this. Thank you for your ongoing optimism and courage. Everyone on this board is such an inspiration!

I'm sorry your dad is going through this. My dad just passed away on Monday.

I'm no doctor but this isn't good. My dad did the same thing. It is his liver failing. Also the dark, tea-colored urine, can be kidney failure. These are some of the signs of the dying process. The organs slowly start to not function anymore and these are the effects. There are some good resorces on this site about "nearing the end of life". It helps you to understand what to expect a bit, although it in no way prepared us for how my dad's journey would end. I didn't realize that the process starts weeks to months in advance.

I know these are comforting or encouraging words. I just had to be honest with what we experienced. Let no words of love go unspoken. Savor every moment of time, smiles, and prayers together. There may be a time that he becomes less aware or unable to speak the words any longer. Record his voice if you can. I wish we would have done that.

Prayers for you and your dad,

    Deb

    Thank you... I read
Thank you... I read William's post last month about end of life and had noticed that my father had some of the signs. I appreciate your honesty, both of you. My father has had a fever on and off for the past couple of months because of his tumor. The doctor ordered a cat scan of the stomach. We're still waiting to hear. I am in MA and my parents are in PA. I had planned to go home on Tuesday and now thinking that I should leave tomorrow morning. My mom said that my father would get upset if I left today -- that's my dad :)
I seem to be the only one, along with my mom who understands and is accepting of what is ahead of us. I just hope that he is in comfort and without pain -- that all I want right now! Thanks for listening and your responses.

I always think of everyone on this site daily ... it's a struggle, but this group brings a ray of sunshine to the situation.

The last leg of the journey...
My Dad (84 years young) fought stage IV EC for 15 months – he was on chemo for 12 months straight and even had SIR-spheres for the liver mets (the only mets we knew of). After 12 months the chemo stopped working, the SIR-spheres did not seem to help and he started his final decline. I can tell you that my Dad did not suffer physical pain – in fact he turned down all the “comfort” drugs from hospice during his last week. He had the signs of dying that have already been mentioned for about 2 months and then he actually went very peacefully with no pain.

I think the hardest part (for me and Dad) was how long the dying process can take – it’s easy to think “this is the last day” when there may actually be more WEEKS – this can be exhausting. I don’t know what to tell you other than to treasure every day you have left – for me some of the final days will always be my most precious memories.

    Take care,
    MaryJo

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have been reading your posts and many others, In some way your personal experiences has prepared me for mine and I am very grateful for that even thought it is very difficult to face those realities. I am wishing you and your family strength during this challenging time.

    Hi
Hi. I just want to say I am sorry you have to be here and My thoughts and prayers go out to your Dad, family and friends. I lost my BIL to stage IV esoph cancer in August. He was only 58... He put up a long valiant 18 mos. fight . He had some very aggressive treatment and he told my SIL he didn't regret any of those treatment. The last 2 or 3 mos of his life were very difficult. I wasn't one of his caretakers, but I do know that the last 2 mos. he started throwing up all the time and slept almost constantly... and I do know that brown urine is a sign of kidneys shutting down. I think it's amazing your Dad doesn't have pain. That is a blessing.
