Full Scoop on Surgery
First will be the mass by the kidney, maybe, maybe not, depends on the mass, if it's too big, their going to leave it there and it will have to have radiation therapy later. If it's small enough they are going to be cutting it out, cutting the ureter, putting shunt in, reconnecting ureter and then radiation surgeon will do the radiation while open to mop up anything left over. The next surgeon coming in, will remove the right side colon, bag may or may not be necessary, connect remaining pieces, stitch it up and then the fourth surgeon will come in and remove left side liver lobe area.
The ob/gyn surgeon is on standby as he may not be necessary.
It is expected to take between 6 and 8 hours. Expected to be in hospital 7 days maybe more.
I have a lot of faith in my surgeons, as they are all experts in their own areas.
For those that have surgeons at Stanford mine are, Dr. Raju, Dr. Vissar, Dr. Keet, Dr. Gonzalgo (might be spelled wrong) and I forgot the gyn's name darn it.
Thank you each and everyone for letting me know what to expect on another post, I truly, truly appreciated it!!! Has anyone had all the surgeries done at once before, and how quick was your recovery?
Also, I've been enjoying the heck out of food these past two months without chemo and trying to enjoy as much before surgery (cause after isn't going to be that pleasant of gourmet food, LOL), that I've gained 16 pounds. Good God!!!
Love to you all.

My Goodness Girl
Wow you have a lot to be going through. Sounds like you have a wonderful team of doctors that are all on the same page and working to get you well which is awesome and that you are so comfortable with them is so important. Do you have a date for this surgery is it in the next couple of weeks or just the planning stages yet? Glad that you are eating and getting your strength up, but you will need it after going through all that. Most of the time you can't eat after surgery for days so you will need that extra "cushion."

Don't worry about the lbs.
When you get home you will have lost those 16 extra lbs, more than likely.
My surgery was also a long one, but not as many organs involved. I had complications from the colon/rectal surgery (bowel twisted) so ended up with a second surgery to straighten things out. This made my stay in hosp. up to 15 days.
For me the lack of strenght was the biggest deal in recovery...other than finding something to eat that even tasted good. Because I had basically had no solid food for nearly 3 weeks, it was tough getting back. But, by just doing a little bit extra every day, it was ok.
I sent home my help (my mother) after about 4 weeks. Probably could have managed before then but was very appreciative that she could help.
Also, if you have loving animals...you want to take care. My two cats are not so very heavy, but I couldn't deal with them jumping up on the bed when I was laying down. Seemed to jar all my innards.
Praying for angels to be guiding your surgeons's hands and a speedy recovery for you.

well Winter Marie.....when you do er you really do er! No I have never heard of that many surgeries happening all at once but one way to look at it....when you are going through the preps and anesthesia get it done....my first liver surgery was just over 6 hours and I was 5 days in hospital....
still think you are going to need a hand for at least a week or 2....I had my daughter for about 10 days and that was good....also Marie makes a good point about the cats...a friend of mine just had abdominal surgery and she got one of those bed sortof trays that go over your tummy when you are sitting up....this stopped her loving kitties from poncing on the incision...my incision just from the liver was from hip up to breast bone and back down in a big upside down v so I expect you are going to have quite a little incision yourself there girl
don't worry about weight....please....that will look after itself....
remember protein when you come home...you will have lots of healing to do .....so eggs cheese shakes....got to get that protein for body repair
ok sweetie....sending hugs and prayers and holding your hand...
with very best love

Hi Marie,
Wow girl you have
Hi Marie,
Wow girl you have quite a few things going on Monday. I will be doing my second dose of mop up 5fu and oxy on Monday so while I'm getting the dose I will be saying prayers that your surgeons healing hands do the trick.
Stay strong and have faith. Tom0 -
They fill your belly with fluid after surgery - I "gained" 13 pounds overnight with each of my abdominal surgeries. It resorbed over the next several weeks.herdizziness said:This Monday

However, don't let a sudden extra 10-15 pounds shock you. It sure as heck shocked me the first time! This last time, it took about 2-3 weeks for the weight to drop off - it resorbed pretty slowly.
We'll be thinking of you!

Girl, you really know how to "celebrate" the holidays, don't you? *wry smile* I'll be praying everything goes very well. We'll miss you and can't wait to hear how wonderfully you've done with the surgery.
*hugs*

You will be in my thoughts and prayers. It may seem like a lot at one time, but it beats the alternative of going in numerous times to take care of everything. I only had one addtional surgeon when I had the resection and that was the ob/gyn to dothe hysterectomy.I was in surgery for 6 hours. I think the recovery for any abdominal surgey is hard, so in a way, you only have to deal with the recovery once. You are blessed to have a great team of doctors! As for the weight gain? you will lose this quickly after the surgery, and you know what? even if you don't, who cares? you are enjoying what you need to right now and that is all that matters!! Good luck on Monday, I will be thinking of you and saying a prayer that all goes well. We are going to miss you around here, so get better soon and get back to us!!

Wow!
That's a lot for you to be doing! I'm glad you have confidence in your team, that's so important. I will be looking forward to hearing your posts on how you are doing with recovery, I'm sure everything will go smooth as silk! Just be sure to not try and rush the process, give your body the time it needs to do it all. Take care and stay strong. You will be glad you have those extra 16 lbs when your body is eating calories trying to heal!
