might be a strange question

Jim had his CT scan Thursday, with the usual steroid prep and benadryl for his allergy to the dye along with IV fluids before and after the test. He is having 10 or more loose stools a day lately and he gets his 7th folfox Tuesday. Needless to say his bum is hurting!
Is it typical for this to continue to get worse as the treatments progress? I guess we just need to know if this is normal? The strange question is about gas. Has anyone had horrible gas with treatment? Not painful, just really bad.
We will get results from the local oncologist Tuesday and will go to see his surgeon to hear her take on the scan results which are much more optimistic on Thursday, so we'll report in after Thursday.

    Not a strange question at all, especially on this board. My mother-in-law and I both described our gas problem as manufactoring methane. We both had Xeloda in common when this was occuring.
    It wasn't as bad when I was on oxi & 5 FU.

    As my Dad always said "Better out than in!"

    Anal fissure?
    I developed an anal fissure on Folfox after about 4 or 5 rounds - the pain was horrible, and I was told (correctly) that it wouldn't heal until after chemo.

    Lots of sitz baths, but not much relief overall. My surgeon had them make a cardizem ointment for me to relax the anal sphincter - less tension in the sore area. It helped only a little if at all.

    Tell the onc, see what creams will help.

    Yep...both an anal fissure and toxic gas....thanks to folfox :(

    Gas and loose bowels
    They removed my right ascending colon which, so they say, absorb a lot of the fluids before you go. So since after surgery 12/08, I expected lots of diaherra and loose bowels, but I sure didn't expect the amount of time I would spend on the toilet. Took 7 rounds of folfox and immediately after, I spent 10 days in the hospital where they wanted to tally my output every time I went. I think that after so many calls, they insisted I go on lomotil, which definetly helped, but if I did too much I would get constipated and that became worse to worry about then the loose stools....so now 18 mos later, I am more terrified of Constipation then of loose bowels, so it is a real balancing act to watch the food, lomil, other meds to keep as normal as possible. My norm after folfox was loose bowels, which I could help with lomotil, sitz baths and vaseline, but I would rather have loose then constipation. Normal is an occasional wonderful day. Thanks for listening, I could not have this conversation anywhere else other than the dr. office. Good luck with your folfox and scans. OH, forgot about the gas, I have just gotten gas lately, love it, makes me feel better........didn't get much with folfox. Pat

    Gas, ugh, George could clear out the east wing of the mall in 10 seconds flat. Heck, he even farts in his sleep, of course, he sleeps right thru it and it wakes me up every time. I think it just goes with the program. Never concerned about it because the old fart was always a farter.
