Hello All,

I'm a new cancer survivor for a little over a year, currently, I just finished my treatment and not physically capable of working yet. My wife got laid off last month and we have two teens. I'm wondering if there is any insurance plan available for us to get insured if neither of us can find a job soon. My wife company's Cobra is very expensive, more than $1500 per month. I know Obama's new policy is sort of choice, but I did some research and it seems that its only available to people withouth insurance for more than 6 month.

Any input is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Carlos

    bad luck
Well that sounds like flat out bad luck. As a self employed single parent, I found that some states made insurance companies offer reasonable deals to us uninsurable folks. In two states I was able to get blue cross quite reasonably as long as I carried a big deductible. And, though it won't help you and your wife, most states have childrens' coverage available if you're without income. I think a good insurance agent would know of these resources. Hope things turn around for you soon.

    Hello Carlos and welcome.
Hello Carlos and welcome. Are you a senior citizen yet? If so you should have medicare benefits. With medicare you should also be able to add a supplemental insurance policy to that. My parents are both retired, and looked into this. My dad was dx with esophageal cancer in 11/08, he obtained supplemental insurance in 1/09 without any problems. Thank the Lord that we did this. He had many hospital bills from scans and radiation and chemo and medicines. A lot of these things were paid for from the supplemental insurance. Out of a $40,000 bill, he had to pay $700. Unfortunately, he passed away in March. Mom is now having bypass surgery, and the supplemental insurance she has is helping tremendously. The name of the company was Secrure Horizons, now that is in the process of being changed to Humana. I am hoping this helps. Both medicare and the supplemental insurance are quite reasonable financially. If you are not a senior citizen.....I do no have much information.
