Does anyone have the "pinedog" recipe for the feeding tube. His last posting was in 2005 but I could really use the recipe. My sister-in-law has just started her treatments for stage 3 throat cancer and will soon need to use her feeding tube. The family has asked me to help by collecting recipes and alternatives to canned nutrition. I could really uses some help ASAP.

Re: An alternative for your feeding tube
If you decide to get the tube, which I would strongly advise, then to use this recipe you need strong support to help prepare it. It's a lot of work but worth it. If after reading this you are still interested I can email the whole recipe.

To do this you need a juicer and a blender. Through the juicer goes kale, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, celery, carrot, spinach, beet, apple, grapes. In the blender goes tofu, almond butter, avocado, banana, pure fruit juice, prune juice, milk, protein powder, olive oil, herring fish oil, chicken broth, multi vitamins and what's called Green Formula. This is well mixed and seived to make enough to supply three feeds a day for three days. This provides 2000 calories a day of well balanced nutrition with lots of energy and protein. It takes an hour or so to prepare which I suppose is a lot less time than preparing nine separate meals.

I know we've had other posters with suggestions for "home cooked" peg food, and know, too that there are websites out there with more info. Good luck

    Feeding Tube Food
I don't have the "pinedog" recipe for the feeding tube, but I do have a suggestion. I have been tube feeding for ten years, and the best thing ever that I found out about for maintaining a regular diet, was the Vitamix 5000 series blender. It is truely an amazing appliance! My wife burned, literally, through 4-5 regular blenders in the process of blending meals for me, and then a couple of our friends discovered the Vitamix blender, and told us about it; and it has truely created a seachange in our lives. We are able to liquify whatever is being served at any given meal in 3 minutes, thus, I eat (so to speak) whatever the rest of the family is eating. I hope this helps, and I wish for the very best outcome for your sister-in-law's treatment.

An alternative for your feeding tube
Hi Pam, Thanks for responding to my post. My name is Linda and I live in rural PA. My sister-in-law lives on Freeport, NY and has stage 3 throat cancer. She began her treatments yesterday and will soon need to use her feeding tube. Her husband has a very demanding job which allows him little time to help with food prep. They have asked for my help (a huge responsibility). I've done a lot of research and this recipe seems to be the best option for her. She is already under weight and can't afford to lose anymore. I have one question though, can I freeze this? We are 6 hours from Freeport. I am retired and have the time to make the food but I've got to get it to her safely.

Please send the full recipe ASAP anyway. Thanks for your help! I'm a cancer survivor as well and understand what goes into betting it. If this recipe can help Debbie feel more like herself through her ordeal it could make the difference between giving up and surviving.

    Thanks again,
    Linda (usagojuman)

    Hi Patrick,

    There's juicers and there's juicers
The really expensive ones can handle everything - the ones that you can get for about $100 can handle hard vegetables, like carrots and broccoli, but not the parsley and kale.

Good juicers are like sailboats - it's great to have a friend who has one.

I agree about the blender comment - I still use my Oster blender (mounts on my Kitchen Center, which has a motor powerful enough to run a dough hook and meat grinder) that I got for a wedding present. . . .30+ years ago.

One last comment - make sure all of the vegetables are very clean. Even the best places get a bit of unhealthy bacteria on things (unless the produce is grown in a bubble).

    Pricey
The Vitamix is legend - and comes at an epic price. I've gazed longingly at them a couple times at Sam's Club demonstrations,.

    Vitamix discount
Vitamix knocks $125 off the price for medical reasons. I had my doc write up a 2 sentence statement on his letterhead that stated that I had cancer and that I had a PEG. Faxed it to Frank at Vitamix, had the blender 3 days later. The blender is awesome and Vitamix is such a nice company for giving such a big discount.

That is great to hear that
That is great to hear that Vitamix would give a discount. I have no clue how much they cost. I got a Health Master which I like, but I'm sure it's. not as good as your Vitamix. I am glad I got it. That and my mini chopper have been invaluable for cooking, and eating and being able to swallow food.
