I'm a little worried.

In April of 2009 I was diagnosed with colon cancer through a routine colonoscopy. It was early enough that surgery was succesful; no chemo or other treatments were necessary, just 8 days in the hospital and a loss of 18 inches of my colon.

I was supposed to get a one year check up, but time got a way from me and I haven't had it done yet.

Over Thanksgiving I had an occurance where I noticed what appeared to be blood when wiping. When I looked I saw what appeared to be a glob of dark red blood as part of the formed stool, maybe 1" x .5". I couldn't tell if it was just on the surface or went deeper. I've tried to think of what I could have eaten to cause that, but I can't think of anything. (This was before the big dinner, so no cranberries). That's the only time this has happened. I'm going in to get rechecked, but I'm wondering how worried I should be. What are the chances this is something unrelated to cancer? I hope I haven't screwed this up; I don't want to put my wife through all that.

    So you mean you got a cancer and not have any check control
    or visit to onc. until today?

    it could be something
    or
    not

    really the only way you are going to know is to get checked, the sooner the better. And if it is a cancer recurrence, you will deal with it. As will your wife. As we all did, are doing and will continue to do.

    And ya know, if it isn't cancer (and there are all kinds of non cancer reasons for blood in the stool) before you smile, cross yourself and thank God- please make a vow to yourself and your family that you are going to do what is necessary to remain cancer free. That means following the doctor's recommendations for re checks!

    The doctor told me they got it all. He tested 18 lymph nodes and all came back clean. He said to get checked in a year. Time got a way from me. It all happened so fast, sometimes it doesn't seem real. Had 2 colonoscopies. The second one was on Monday, had surgery on Tuesday, got out Wednesday of the next week and was back at work the following Monday. Kind of like a bad dream. I guess I just put it out of my mind.

    Check it out
    My advice is definitely get this checked out. It could many different things, but once you have had colon cancer you need to keep careful watch.

    Well...probably it's nothing important and I pray for that
    but please check it asap , and from now insist your doctor to have more frequent checks remember despite been probably a very early
    stage cancer,it was a cancer !.

    I was diagnosed at Stage 1 also, but my family doctor set me up with an oncologist as soon as I recovered from the surgery. I've been having regular checks with him since then. I'm sorry your doctor didn't do the same.

    Hopefully this is nothing, but you need to have it checked, just to be sure. Please let us know!

    I'd say don't make any excuses for making that appointment ASAP. You owe it to yourself and your wife. Don't look for things that will make you feel better (i.e. benign causes for it which it could certainly be but won't know for sure till you get checked out) because the only thing that's going to make you feel better is getting a checkup and making sure things are okay. And if it's not (okay), then, as you know, you need to take care of it now.

    Schedule that appointment and now. Yes it was a bad dream but you don't want to wake from that dream into a full blown nighmare that it came back and spread. I for one, has bathroom problems for a long time before I finally went for a colonoscopy. And then got the shock of my life!
    As much as I get anxious about seeing the doctor and having tests, these appointments and tests help so that if anything is not right, it can be addressed!!
