thrush
Not sure, all I can say is my experence so far. I have only had one treatment, TC, 2 weeks ago. At day five my whole mouth ws sore, felt like I'd been chewing sand all night. My onc told me to use a rinse of warm water with salt and baking soda. I had been using this, missed one day of it, and woke the next with the problem. Let me say, I have used it faithfully every since. It has gotten much better. I rinse at least four times a day, and do try to do it before I eat every time, and if I've eaten something with much acid I will use it afterwards also. Hope this helps.0 -
I'm so sorry you are having
I'm so sorry you are having this problem. I was told to use alcohol free mouth wash and I did every day X 2 and I only got one or two sores ( not bad ) a couple times. I hope this help you.. Take care and good luck Kay0 -

I got thrush with every AC but no mouth sores. It would go away then come back. I did not get it with taxol, but my white blood count was not lowered. I used peridex as well. It is a prescription oral rinse ordered by my doctor. My tongue never bled. I would ask about this.0 -
Jean and Hopeful,
not sure if "bleeding" is included but I was told to chew on ice chips during tx then use Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash to prevent mouth sores. My TC doesn't start til the 22nd so I am not speaking from experience...
Heard of the soda and warm water too..
Wish I could whisk the discomfort away for yous!

as if 'chemo' is horrible enough to endure .. then we get all the wonderful, and sickening side efforts.
warm water with baking soda, or warm water with salt .. swish around in your mouth -- 2 x an hour.
No eating of ice chips, potatoe chips - anything with hard edges .. warm soups, soft fruits - for a few days ..
Biotene or Tom's natural tooth paste -- Tom's can be found at your local Target
Hugs and strength for you,

It's amazing what this chemo
It's amazing what this chemo does to our bodies...I don't have any additional advice. But I'm hoping you get this side effect under control soon, and you'll be in my thoughts.
Hugs,

Jean, this just sucks and I
Jean, this just sucks and I am so sorry that you are having to deal with it!
Thrush can cause bleeding, but usually when you try to "wipe off" the white patches:
"What Are the Symptoms of Thrush?
Thrush usually develops suddenly, but it may become chronic, persisting over a long period of time. A common sign of thrush is the presence of creamy white, slightly raised lesions in your mouth - usually on your tongue or inner cheeks - but also sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesions, which may have a "cottage cheese" appearance, can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them or brush your teeth. In severe cases, the lesions may spread into your esophagus, or swallowing tube, causing:
Pain or difficulty swallowing
A feeling that food gets stuck in the throat or mid-chest area
Fever, if the infection spreads beyond the esophagus
Thrush can spread to other parts of the body, including the lungs, liver, and skin. This happens more often in people with cancer, HIV, or other conditions that weaken the immune system."
From: http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-health-thrush
After chemo, the thrush will resolve, but maybe not right away. If you are not having any improvement in your thrush symptoms, call your doc back. He/she may have to prescribe different or additional meds.
"How Can Thrush Be Prevented?
The following can help you prevent thrush:
Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
Avoid mouthwashes or sprays. These products can destroy the normal balance of microorganisms in your mouth.
See your dentist regularly. Especially if you have diabetes or wear dentures.
Limit the amount of sugar and yeast-containing foods you eat. Foods such as bread, beer, and wine encourage candida growth.
If you smoke, quit. Ask your doctor or dentist about ways to help you kick the habit."0 -

Sore Mouth/Thrush
I was fortunate, I never experienced either.....a good friend of mine, he's a Maxillary/Facial surgeon, prescribed Nystatin for me..before I started chemo, "just in case" I did develope mouth problems..It is kept in the refigerator and I used it daily.....you "swish" it around in your mouth and spit it out..It does have a minor numbing feeling..Don't know if I would have developed mouth problems, but perhaps the Nystatin kept it at bay...Maybe you could ask for an Rx for this and see if it help.....
I wish you the best0 -
Magic Mouthwash
I was given this, didn't like it, hated the taste, but it worked for me. I had mucosis, don't know if its the same as thrush, but nonetheless, here is what Wikopedia said about Magic Mouthwash:
Magic mouthwash and magic swizzle are terms referring to a number of different mouthwash formulations. Typically, a magic mouthwash is prescribed to treat the pain associated with mucositis caused by radiation therapy or chemotherapy. It is also prescribed for aphthous ulcers, other oral ulcers, and other mouth pain.[1]
The thinking behind magic mouthwash is to combine ingredients to treat a variety of oral conditions. Magic mouthwashes are typically compounded in a pharmacy from a doctor's prescription. The prescription should always specify a recipe, since there is not a standard formulation, and problems can arise when patients receive a product different from what the prescriber intended.[2][3]0 -

Been using the baking soda, salt and hot water solution. Using Biotene, alcohol free mouthwash. Have the Nystatine (sp?) prescription. Have sore throat that "burns and throbs" wakes me up at night. Eating soft, warm foods, no spicy stuff. Still using the prescription from Onc. Tongue is better but throat is bothering me. Going in to see Onc. He wants to see me before prescribing somethng new. Thank you all for answering my question on "thrush".0
