Hello,

Just thought I'd give an update on what's going on with me. First some background. I was originally diagnosed with OVCA Clear Cell Stage 1C Grade 2 in August, 2009. Had complete hysterectomy, usual chemo protocol of 18 weeks carboplatin and taxol. Have been happily enjoying remission for about 1 year. My last CA125 was 8 in August 2010.

3 weeks ago I started having pain in my right side near the bottom of my ribs every time I took a deep breath in.

At first manageable with Ibuprofen but then the pain increased. CT Scans and MRI of the liver showed fluid building up near my liver which is causing the pain. Most disturbing is my CA125 spiked to 77.

I'm having a recurrence. My gyn/onc is doing a 2nd look surgery on Nov 17th to drain the fluid, and take out anything else he sees.

I'm obviously very disappointed in this news. My husband and I came home from the doctor on Wednesday and our minds have been spinning ever since.

My doctor had cautioned me in the past that even though I was Stage 1C there was a chance it would recur because of the clear cell component.

I will get back in cancer fighter mode and would appreciate any prayers and good thoughts.

pj

I'm so sorry to hear you are having the dreaded recurrence - I think once diagtnosed the fear of it is never far below the surface. I was about the same time out when I had mine. My daughter hates Novembers - she noted every crisis seemed to come in that month :-(
With surgery your doc will get a visual of what is going on and again remove any obvious tumors.
My thoughts and prayers are with you for smooth sailing thru this.

It's almost worse than the original diagnosis, isn't it?
I recurred for the 1st time November of 2009 and I remember the shock and pain of it. It was like attending my own funeral to see each of my loved ones collapse into sobbing when they heard the news; they were all so very sure I had it beat. (How naive when I have a grade 3 cancer and was originally staged at III-3! But I know they all thought cancer was behind us, reasonable or not.) It took me hours to calm down my little granddaughter, who judged from everyone's reaction that I was about to die.

But now, a year later, everyone is used to 'my condition', and I can rarely even get away with playing the 'cancer card' to get out of things I don't want to do. Chemo is just an interruption in my otherwise busy full and happy life. You have the advantage of already knowing how strong you are. Go forth with confidence. ((((Hugs)))). I'm so sorry you have to go through this again.

    Sorry to hear
    PJ,
I think the recurrence news is sometimes harder than when you are first diagnosed for some. The good news here is that your getting the 2nd look around by your gyn/onc who seems to be staying on top of it. Good luck to you on Wednesday and prayers to you and your hubby!

Hello Paula! I am so sorry
Hello Paula! I am so sorry about yours recurrence.I am your neighbor from Milwaukee, my cancer was stage 2C (February 2007) and I did have chance 50/50 for cure, but it didn't happen. I also had recurrency January 2010, after 8 cicles of carbo/gemzar I am NED all most 5 month. My recurrency was not operatable. Chemo did a good job and 5 spots in pelvic area disapper. What I trying to say it is very painful and dissapointing when cancer come back but you can beat it. I like to hug you and give you a little comfort (do you feel it?). I hope your surgery will be very successful, and I am sure you will beat this a ugly monstor again. First time I was treated at Good Hope Advanced Healthcare and second time at Cancer Center Froetdert Hospital. Where you going for your sergery? If you like to call me, my Ph. # under Teska Fred&Zina(Fairlane Ct.)I Wish you the best, hugs, Zina.

I am so sorry to hear this
I am so sorry to hear this and would love to have you keep posting. I was just diagnosed 1c grade 3 clear cell and start chemo on the 19th. My gyn oc felt that everything was gotten but he did say clear cell is slippery. I feel pretty good about the early stage but I know that clear cell adds a whole other dimension. Best of luck in your renewed fight. Susan

    thanks much
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and wishes. As disappointed as I am, I will put my Cancer-Fighter gear back on and beat this.

I enjoyed such a wonderful year being in remission, getting married to my long time boyfriend, trips up north to beautiful Door County in Wisconsin and a trip to San Fransicso/Napa Valley to visit my son. I also worked pretty much full time during my treatments and enjoyed time spent at home puttering in the yard and taking long walks. I plan to do more of the same once I recover from surgery.

My goal is to get back to remission and continue to make wonderful memories with those I love.

    Kindest regards,

    Paula

    Zina,

Thanks for much for your note. I'm being treated at Aurora St. Luke's and am very satisfied with the care I've received there. Congrats on being NED for 5 months...I hope to join you as soon as possible.

Virtual hug back to you !
