    Great news - it made my day. I hope it stays wide opens and gets wider. You got spit, taste, and now you can swallow ! Amazing how these simple things we once took for granted are now treasured.

    I spoke with a friend today about this and he was ecstatic jumping around doing the happy dance. It was pretty cool. Then he reminded me of something. His wife survived lymphoma and his take on chronic illness is that surviving it (the caretakers too) can create a sense of compassion because we have survived a brutal journey through tremendous physical and emotional pain and suffering.

    It got me thinking about how the experience at once joins us, creates a community that instantly 'knows' and instantly cares. I realized in that moment that this is a community I did choose to join, yet feel overwhelmingly grateful and proud to be in its number.

    Thanks to every one of you amazing survivors and amazing caregivers.

    Hey Scam
    HA! I work for SOS Counseling Services, but eventually it will become my private practice and I already have a name for it: 3 Rocks Community Counseling. Remember the 3 rocks story during my treatment? My 6-year-old son collected 3 random rocks on his way home from school and gave them to me, one at a time prior to a radiation treatment. He said, "This one is to help you eat. This one is to help with the pain. And this one is to take away the worry."

    These represent, to me, three important aspects of the human condition and are at the center of what I do as a counselor: become invested in my client's physical well being, become a guide and support to alleviate pain, and provide resources to deal with the stress of the day-to-day. My son's ability to process his own feelings and anxiety around my illness are an inspiration to me. No one told him what to do, he just figured out a way to express it, so the 3 rocks have become extremely meaningful to me.

    Hi Mick,
    First I want to say congratulations on eating. That is HUGE..
    And also congrats on your counseling service. The story about the name really touched my heart. Kids are so amazing. You are so very blessed to have such a special son.
