whipple
I had whipple surgery 5/25/10 for ampullary cancer, the head of my pancreas was removed as precaution, although no cancer was detected in the pancreas. 22 weeks post op and I FINALLY am feeling 100% recovered, but not without complications. I had 6 weeks of Xeloda (oral chemo) and radiation. Would be happy to share/compare procedures/complications and successes. my email is: topnotchplus@yahoo.com
regards and my best to you!

Whipple
I had the whipple procedure in late august. They removed a 2cm tumor in my small intestine and head of the pancreas. so far, I have been doing well and i started chemo 3 weeks ago. I am often tired and sick to my stomach. I have been told that 12 out of 33 lymph nodes were involved. I was recommended for chem, but not radiation. I was wondering if that is a standard recommendation.
I hope you are doing well.0 -

DB9856,
In early 2008 I Was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. I was told I had a golf ball size tumor on my pancreas and the cancer had also encased an artery. I took chemo and radiation for several months before my Whipple which was done in Sept. 2008. They took out a 3'rd of my pancreas, about a foot of small intestine,my gallbladder and the cancer around the artery and 17 lymph nodes. ( all Negative). Just a positive foot note for others that might hear "An artery is encased by the cancer!" ( They found out during the surgery the cancer had encased the artery but, had not attached itself to it. They could not tell this with with all the modern technology. If, they had not done the Whipple. They would not have know this and I wouldn't be here typing now!) But after all this I was told to take chemo (Gemzar). To make sure any and all possible cancer cells that, might not have been seen in any other areas of the body. Would stand a better chance of being eliminated. I hope that answered your question about chemo after the Whipple. As far as no radiation after, if that was your question? I never asked and was glad not to have to do it again! So far, since that September day of my surgery. I have been in remission. Just today I had a scan and if all is good (which I think it will be!). Will find out next week. I'll only have to take a scan once a year.
Sorry about rambling on there for a bit.
May the LORD BLESS all of you who are fighting this horrible disease and those who take care of them also.

I had a Whipple in 2008 also. I have daily pain in my abdominal region which I take meds for. They make it tolerable for the most part. Some days are worse than others. Sometimes after eating the apex of the area along the scar and muscles gets rock hard and painful. My surgeon told me when I awoke from my surgery I would most likely be on pain meds as well as other meds for the rest of my life. Talk to your doctor about pain management.
Take Care and GOD BLESS!

Hi
I had the whipple done in March of this year. They originally diagnosed me with pancreas cancer, but after testing and biopsy they diagnosed me as having periampullary duodenal adnocarcinoma. The whipple was done on March 15 and they removed a 4.5 cm tumor and my bile duct, gall bladder, part of my pancreas ect...About 10 weeks later I started radiation for 25 days with xeolda. Three weeks after I finished radiation I started chemo. My doc is treating me using the same chemo regime as colon cancer. I have had 6 treatments so far and my doc is hoping to stop at 8 treatments. Fingers crossed!!!0 -

Ray,
I wanted to say thanks for your congrats and best wishes. You are so right in your statement about "A second shot at life!" All I can say is the LORD put me in the hands of very capable doctors. I just last week received another good report. Like you have stated there have been some complications and I realize that, I have lost a step or two (so to speak!). Considering the alternative...I know I have been very blessed with each passing day.
I've read some of your posts on here and see you have had your own battle with cancer and the recovery from a Whipple also. I will keep you and your family in my prayers!
Take Care and GOD BLESS!

survived whipple
I am 66 and was misdiagnosed When they finally discovered I had a seruious blockage they scheduled exploratory surgery During the surgery they found cancer of the duodenum and it had invaded the head and neck of the pancreas Because the liver at that time was invaded with cancer they opted to do a Whipple procedure I also have NF1 whichh makes things a lot worse I had many complications including a bile leak, an infection, several blood transfustions My most recent CT scan showed new growth on the liver and behind the pancreas. It has been a year since the Whipple
I feel I am lucky to be alive but I have not be told about my prognosis except that the cancer could come back and it has The doctor thinks we sit and wait it out because the new growth is so small0 -
