God in America - PBS Series

This looks like it could be interesting. For someone who is not a fan of religion and very questionable about the existence of God, I really find this topic to be interesting. Mainly because it shaped our world so much and is at the root of many global issues. This listing is for the NYC/East Coast area. I'm not sure if this is on PBS everywhere or not. I hope that it would be at some point.

    I'd love to watch it but we
    I'd love to watch it but we don't get cable or local channels. I'll have to wait for it on Netflix. I wish history shows were more about stuff like this instead of concentrating on war.

    Maybe you can watch it on your computer? PBS shows their shows on the internet. You may have to wait a few days, I'm not sure if they stream it "live" or not but you can see it at a later date.

    I have a hunch that this will also deal with war. It's kind of hard to look at God and not bring war(s) into it since so many have had that as an underlying basis for war.
    I find that PBS does a great job covering topics from a neutral point of view. I find them to have the facts, you can draw your own conclusion.

    The first part of the show was on here last night (Alabama). I thought it was very informative and certainly gave a perspective I appreciated.

    Hope to see the rest of the series.

    I went online and looked last night. I was just signing on to tell you guys. I found it by going to pbs.org and clicking on the 'Watch the series online' under God in America.

    I caught parts of it, I'll have to watch in online. I found it interesting. Especially when it got into the Reagan years. It was interesting how Jerry Fallwell and the Moral Majority (who by the way are neither) embraced him yet he wasn't a particularity religious guy. His handlers were savvy enough to use them to help boost his presidency. One thing that was reinforced for me at least was that religion has no place in government at all.

    Being a Yankee (Northerner) the TV evangelists were (almost) comical to me. It's definitely something that is not common up here at all. If it wasn't for the fact that I've seen them on TV tell people to send them their money, even if they are broke and have to put it on their credit cards, because the TV guys were told by God to get the money to help people. Yes, charity begins at home...their homes it seems.

    Being a Yankee had nothing to do with finding them comical - as a Southerner, I find them appalling and found them embarrassing when I was young. I know from your other posts you may not believe in the Bible, but it clearly states prayer is to be done "hidden away" and that Christians should avoid street-corner evangelists. They teach a false truth.

    Religion and politics - I think we all can see religion has been misused for political gain and that it is not restricted to any faith or belief. Even shamans held great power within their clans.

    I do not think they represent all southerners just as Son of Sam doesn't represent all New Yorkers (only about half of them!). I remember taking a trip to NC about 20 years ago. I stopped in a fast food joint to get a burger and some old yahoo was mumbling about the "damn yankee". War's over Pops, you lost! It's just that I do not think I've heard one with a Boston accent (yet).

    You're right, I do not believe that the Bible is the word of God. But isn't the Bible really open to interpretation? From what I understand, spreading the word and converting people is how some people interpret the Bible.

    Religion and politics, politics and religion. They have both been misused for gains in both arenas. I agree, shaman misused it too. This all strengthens my point that the Bible, Koran, or whatever were written by men to control other men. That's what it's about as far as the Big Picture goes. They are rule books. I also think that there are parts of the books that offer great advice (for lack of a better term) on how a society should operate. We need a set of rules to live by. I do think that some very good ideas are brought up. I also feel that all of the books hold certain things that are true. It's just that when it's taken word for word and literally that the problems arise.

    I certainly do not have the answers nor do I claim to. I just feel we need to keep and open mind and also use our brains. Yes, I know...two somewhat difficult tasks.

    Who would have thought of looking for me "in church"!
    Hi Kathleen, I have found the other area to be too much of the same old stuff. I can't bother getting into the same discussions with the same people and I also can't NOT comment when I read the same nonsense over and over. So I come here to have what I often feel are more interesting conversations.

    I hope that you both are doing well. Things are OK with me. Still in treatment but no complaints.
