Any recommendations for doctors at the University of PA - Abramson Cancer Center?

My father has stage IV colon cancer. He had the tumor in his colon removed in Jan of 09 and has a colostomy. At initial diagnosis he was told he had three large tumors in the liver and a small nodule in the lung. He has responded well to chemo and drs at Sloan Kettering are recommending a hepatic pump for 3 months and then resection. The problem is he has an HMO and Sloan is not in network. The drs at Univ of PA are in network and appear to provide similar treatment, I am just not sure what drs to see. I am looking for an oncologist, as well as a liver & lung surgeon. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Welcome to the board. As far as doctors, I don't have a clue, I'm in Michigan. The reason I am responding is the "hepatic pump". People have had excellent results with this. If my hubby were ever eligible for this I would do everything I could to get it. There is an appeals process to get insurance companies to cover stuff. I don't know of anyplace other than Sloan that does the hepatic pump.

Fight the insurance company for coverage. Some on the board (I believe Lisa42) is knowledgable in this regard. Send her a pm.

    Take care - Tina

    Hi Eileen
I think it would be best to talk to your dad's doctors at Sloan Kettering about the insurance issue and ask for them to recommend a doc/team at UPA. They should understand and be able to help get the best avaialbe and to exchange information.

    Good Luck,

I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations for you but, I did want to welcome you to the group. There is so much information here from so many experienced and well researched people that I'm sure someone might be able to help with suggestions. It is good hear that he has responded well to chemo. I will be wishing all the best for you and your father.
