Rogaine?

Has anyone (especially the girls out there) tried Rogaine for post-chemo hair regrowth? I've read that it can be effective if used during and after chemo to regrow hair more quickly. I don't see anything about use during chemo on the company's website, and I'll ask my doctor about safety. Just wanted to see if anyone else has tried it.

    Input from hair stylist
    I ran this idea past the woman who did my wigs, and she said Rogaine can be really irritating to the scalp due to the alcohol in it. If I try it out, I'll post how it goes.

    Hi Lisa,
    I still have my hair, but have only had 2 rounds of chemo r-cvp. My hair is thinning, but no chunks or handfuls as of yet. About 2 weeks after being diagnosed I cut 18 inches off of my hair and went to a short cut. That was a huge step for me since I have worn my hair long since high school. Earlier this week my hair guy gave me a trim and I had him take it a little shorter yet. Bought a cute shoulder length wig for the fun of it and some turbins and doo rags for around the house, but actually plan on wearing nothing to cover my head when hanging out at home. I don't think I would use any kind of chemical on my scalp ever again. I read that hair dyes back in the 80's may have been a contributing factor to Lymphoma cancer. From late 80's on they changed something in hair dyes and now say they are safer. I'm thinkin...why risk it...just for hair???? Whatever color my hair comes back in as, or it's texture will be fine with me...no more hair coloring, tinting, or fussin after this crazy battle is behind me. Time to look at whats inside instead of the outside...of course I'm old enough now and happy with who I am, and have no desire to impress people one way or the other. I yam who I yam!..ha! Sue

    Hi Sue,
    After writing that entry, I thought, most people on this board are not fretting about their hair, why am I? I guess because it's always been a part of my identity and a good hair day meant a good day in general. My hair is just starting to fall out a little. I have wigs in hand and my hair dresser is on red alert. I haven't yet cut it and I think I'll just have him give me a buzz cut when it really becomes noticeable.

    You raise really great points about chemicals. I'm trying to cut as many out of my life as possible, so why on earth would I consider rubbing some on my scalp?!?

    You are so right about those chemicals. I feel the same way. Just hate this thinning hair thing. Feel like its never gonna grow back. John

    Hi John,

    While everyone is quick to remind me that it'll grow back, it feels like adding insult to injury. And I know for a stone-cold fact that I do not have a pretty head! Thank goodness for wigs and hats.

    Hi Lisa,
    You and me both on the "pretty shaped head"...no way no how is my head going to look even half way decent with no hair. I have a round face, short neck and the back of my head is flat...not round. I don't look "cute" in ball caps, stocking caps, bandanna's etc. Some women just look great in head wear, but I am NOT one of them. The one big plus for me wearing my hair long, was it allowed me to wear so many styles and cover up the "imperfections" I perceived having. Lets face it...when push comes to shove...we all perceive ourselves in a certain light and when we arn't happy then bottom line no amount of encouragement makes us feel any prettier. I am learning to be tolerant of things I can't control like with the hair loss...what the heck else can you do...sigh! As hubby says..."we will grow old gracefully together...thin hair, or no hair, at least we have each other". ...Love...Sue

    And my head is lumpy
    So what are you gonna do? I like your attitude and will try to copy it this week. My husband keeps telling me that it doesn't matter, I'm still beautiful and it will grow back. When that fails, he puts on one of my wigs and has me howling with laughter.
