November is Lung Cancer Month, and some survivors have started a Facebook page urging people to "Wear Pearls in November for Lung Cancer." They're not asking for donations, they just want to bring people's attention to our underfunded cancer, and maybe start to smudge away some of the stigma by associating lung cancer with pearls and white ribbons, rather than smoking...

    Hello Stayingcalm. Lately, my hubby has been expressing how there is no symbol, movement or visuals that stand for Lung Cancer Survivors. He has read up and shares that the statistics show that attention and $ is not being spent on this cancer. I know that it is his anger at times, but he is correct.
    Finally, something, we affected by lung cancer, can use as a symbol to express what we are fighting for!

    Thank you for letting us know about this link, I just clicked on LIKE but noticed there weren't too many who had yet. Hopefully your post will help get the word out about this website.

    I love FB, several of the people I've met on the Head and Neck forum and I have become friends on FB, it gives us another way to stay connected with each other.

    ...now I'll have to go get me some (imitation) pearls... there definitely is a stigma against lung cancer, as if it's someones own fault if they get it. Just wondering, how underfunded is lung cancer research...

    may be other statistics, when I find them I'll post
    "However, in the United States, lung cancer receives just $1,200 of federal funding per death, while breast cancer receives more than $27,000 per death, followed by $14,000 for prostate cancer and $6,500 for colon cancer." (quoted from the American College of Chest Physicians ACCP)

    I can not believe these statistics!! We definitely have to do something to change this. I'll have to do some browsing also and see what I can find, I certainly hope these are outdated numbers.

    Thanks Stayingcalm. I have been looking for a way to get involved in my community but have been having a difficult time finding what I would like to do. I agree that people feel lung cancer is associated with smoking. I try to tell people that the type I have is most common to non smokers and women. But some respond yeah but you smoke. Kind of like I did this to myself. I find this very frustrating. But I guarantee that I will be wearing my pearls. Maybe it will draw some attention to the cause.

    Thanks again for all the information you have shared with us. I'll be wearing pearls (fake:) in November but wish there was more we could do to make everyone more aware of lung cancer. Have shared everything with all of my Facebook friends and they are sharing it also. Even though that is a relatively small number of people I feel that every little bit helps.

    I saw this and also sent it out to everyone I know. Last I saw they had 800 people sign in on their page. But remember Breast Cancer started out small and look how far they have come in the last 10 years.

    I will be wearing pearls.

    I can't believe these statistics!!! Everything this month is pink for breast cancer & I was wondering too, what the heck, what about all the other cancers???? Haven't checked the site out yet but I will. Take care!! "Carole"

    Thank you stayingcalm,for all the information you have provided on this web site, you have been so helpful. There are no lung cancer support groups in my area and like so many others who have or are survivors of lung cancer or are a care giver to someone with lung cancer we suffer in silence. I will be wearing white ribbons and pearls in November and will get the word out! Paul..

    Pearls make anything you wear decent and even better. It's the thought that counts :)

    Been wearing Pearls
    I'm already wearing the pearls! And spreading the message everywhere and anywhere I go!I found some lovely fresh water pearl bracelets and bought all they had (awesome clearance!) and have been giving them out to family and friends with love and the promise that they will spread the message! My hubby had his ear pierced and will be sporting a tiny pearl!
