Hooray...I saw my oncologist today and he gave me the ALL CLEAR. He suggested that I make contact with the surgeon and get the other hem's removed, and to have a test done to determine the type of discharge I am having so it can be properly treated. I see the PCP dr for that on Wed 9/29, at which time I'll also ask for a referral back to the surgeon for the removal. I am scheduled to see the onco dr on 12/22/10, so until then, I'm just going to celebrate. I will, however, maintain my health standards by avoiding people who are sick or might be sick so I don't get ill as a result of my low resistance. It's been a long, awful summer for me, but I'm looking forward to the future of being cancer free.

    That is wonderful news, so happy for you. I know the feeling of elation after good news like that is just indescribable. Congratlations!

    Hi Ranelle!

    I know you've been sweating this out, so I'm very happy to hear that you got good news! Congratulations. Now you can focus on getting the other issues resolved and get back to being completely healthy! Please keep us posted on what you find out, but in the meantime, celebrate!

    surgery after radiation
    congrats on your great news!!! i was told that due to radiation damage , an anal tag that I have could not be removed (15 months post treatment). told would not heal . so just wondering if anyone else heard this regarding hemms. or etc. thankyou sephie

    Surgery
    My surgeon told me to NEVER have surgery in that area. He said that radiated tissue would never heal properly. I wish he would have taken care of my hemis when he removed the tumor, because now I can't have them removed.

    Congrats on your good news. This was wonderful to read when I came in here today. I'm sure that you are much relieved and you should celebrate and enjoy the news. I had my hemi's removed before treatment (that is how they found the tumor) and one area that was removed became slightly ulcerated due to treatment - slow healing but it is healing. I have not heard anything about not having surgery after but have not asked about it either. I would venture to guess that my own healing was slowed due to the radiation (started treatment about 4 weeks after surgery), Keep us posted on your surgery and how that goes.     Good for you!!! I can't wait till I get that all clear speech. As far as post treatment surgery...I don't know. Like Sissy, they found the cancer due to my having hemmy surgery and I started radiation and chemo 4 weeks later. As I'm still trying to get over that pain, I couldn't even imagine more surgery at this point. Keep your chin up, revel in your good news and keep us posted. Melodie

    As someone who just had a
    As someone who just had a surgical procedure in this area 10 days ago post-treatment, I can say that it has been slow to heal, but things are getting better. I wouldn't advise anyone to have surgery for hemi's or anything else until they have a thorough talk with their docs about the recovery process. In my case, the warts had to come out and I'm doing pretty darned good now!

    Melodie, so you pretty much had the same scenario as me...hemmy surgery, cancer diagnosis and treatment. Your recovery sounds similar to mine as well. If it is any consolation, this is starting wk 6 after radiation and I'm feeling much more energy than I did last week. I still tired when I do too much so I listen to my body and rest (the stuff that needs to get done will get done) but I feel like I have a little more this week than last. After reading this thread, I was trying to imagine what it would be like to go through the treatment with hemmy's as well. I imagine that it would be more painful. I was glad they removed mine before but now wonder what happens if some crop up later on? I think I will put signs all over my house now "MUST EAT FIBER" to remind me. Marilyne

    Martha, glad things are getting better for you. I know one external hemmy that was removed prior to treatment became ulcerated during treatment and is just healing at a snail's pace. Please keep us posted on your healing process. Hope each day gets better and better for you. Hugs, Marilyne

    onco dr gave the go-ahead
    When I got the all clear from the oncologist on 9/24, he said that I could get with the surgeon and ask to have the other hemms removed. Now, the surgeon might not want to, but at least I'm going to ask him to...I want them tested for pre-cancerous cells, as I used to have abnormal paps with pre-cancerous cells about 1 in 3-4 gyn exams. I will keep you updated on what the surgeon tells me about having them removed after radiation. Ranelle

    Thanks to everyone here...
    I know the surgeon did not remove the hemms in the first surgery in May because he saw this one as suspicious and didn't want to open a bigger can of worms, so he said. Once I got the diagnosis that the one was cancer, treatments were soon to follow after all the scans and tests ordered by the oncologist. I am just short of 8 weeks out of radiation treatment, but the outside anal area seems to be healed -- other than some fissures that occur when the bm is a little constipated-like. The only thing I can think of that might hinder having the other hemms removed at this point might be the urethral discharge/infection that I have going on right now. I will confer with my PCP dr and get a referral to either a gyn or urologist to get this discharge thing taken care of, and in the meantime I will also ask for a referral back to the surgeon so we can get that ball rolling as well.

    Sorry I am so late in replying, Congrats! I had skin tags and biopsies done 6 1/2 weeks after radiation. Yes it did take a while for that area to heal but it was too bad. (I mean the pain) I took pain pills for about 4 days after and then I was good without. I do have 2 skin tags that have reappeared but the surgeon is not worried about them and he is not going to do anything at this point.
