Your mom can apply for Social Security Disability and, since she is a stage IV lung cancer survivor, I believe she will be 'fast tracked' for benefits. She will have to stop working in order to receive these benefits, and they usually do not pay as well as what one earns while working, but it is something to consider.
As for the insurance dilemma, she might want to check into something like Medicare or Medicaid (I am not an expert).
Additionally, following are some places that provide support of one type or another and you and/or mom might consider contacting one or more of them:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Support/financial-resources
This site is put up by the National Institute of Health or some such, and is government-supported.
Cancer Care, a non-profit org., offers free support and counseling for cancer patients by oncology social workers. They have face-to-face counseling and counceling on the phone. Support groups on the phone are available too and are moderated by an oncology social worker. Call 800-813-HOPE. They can also give you info about financial resources. Check their website: www.cancercare.org
Gilda's Club - www.gildasclub.org - they offer free social and emotional support. Not sure if they may have financial information but check it out just in case.
Live Strong - www.livestrong.org - offers one-on-one support.
American Cancer Society (here) can also give you financial, support, etc. information available in different cities.
Hope this helps.
Take care,

Another idea
If your mom works for a school district there should be someone in charge of benefits. She should speak to that person to get the paperwork started for her disability benefits. They should be able to guide her as far as what she may qualify for. Best wishes go out to your mom.0 -
Go this website, secure your
Go this website, secure your application date, will take 1.5 hours to fill out so secure the time, have all paperwork from doctors available, make sure you have a printer.
Also, bring copies to your local social security office, call them and make appt.
I would do this and you will probably get expidited benefits very quickly, mine are taking six months.
Also, your social worker at your hospistal will help you through this, aybe see her first, she may fill out most of the forms for you !!
You need income disability and need medicaid it sounds like.

You're right, Dapsterd - seems there's a window of time for editing posts. There's still an edit button (for me) on the post I just made to Joe, but not on my earlier posts. It's not really important If it bothers you, you could probably ask the powers that be to remove the extras, but the rest of us don't mind...what's that well-known proverb? Oh yeah, "S--t Happens!" ;-)
