My father is starting Taxol next week. Just wondering what the common side effects are. I know everyone is different, but would like some info. on how others responded and what their side effects were.
This is the only other chemo drug my dad is able to try according to his oncologist. Everything else will be too determental(sp?) to his system.
Thanks,
Sally

taxol
Hi Sally,
Charlie is on Taxol (along with Carboplatin) now. He has had 6 sessions. His 7th infusion is tomorrow...provided his WBC counts are up. He couldn't get treatment last week because his counts were too low and he had developed the dreaded mouth sores. So those were 2 of his side effects...mouth sores and low WBC counts. In Aug he needed a unit of blood and needed to be put in the hospital to be hydrated. (He learned his lesson the hard way....he is keeping himself hydrated now.) He is also extremely tired. At times he can sleep 12 - 14 hours...get up and then nap in the afternoon. I believe these side effects are pretty much standard stuff. Of course it could be the Carboplatin or the combo of the two.
I will continue to keep your dad in my prayes.
Stay strong,

for the info. ladies. My dad had to stop the Carboplatin and some other drug that was with it because his blood counts went too low and never did recover fully. He's just know (almost 5 weeks out) starting to get to a point where the dr. can try the Taxol. He said the Taxol shouldn't have the same damaging effects on his bone marrow like the Carbo. did.
I just hope he can stay on it and it's effective.
Thanks you for your prayers as well. I'm praying for you all as well.
Blessings,

Sally,
My dad had taxol in combination with carboplatin. For the most part the nausau and other side effects didn't hit him. His problems were low blood counts and dehydration which really added to the stent problems. In all it got so bad he was admitted to the hospital for an extended period of time. I agree with Sherry you need to make sure you stay on top of the blood counts and hydration. And of course it didn't help that my dad is stubborn and kept insisting he was drinking enough and wasn't going to hang around or go back to the hospital to get IV fluids.
Good luck.
