My Husband

My husband has been on chemo for the last 2 1/2 years. He is currently cancer free, but will be on chemo for the rest of his life. He has been doing well with chemo - not many side effects at all, then just the other day his hair started falling out - i mean really falling out, when I get home from work his shirt is covered with hair that has fallen out. Now everything I have read said that this temporary and will grow back when treatment is over, but he will be on chemo for the rest of his life - does this mean that his hair will never grow back?

We are both very distressed over this.

    First of all, thanks for sharing such a good news story + reminding us how well someone like your husband is doing on chemo. With regards to the hair falling out, I am not sure what combo your husband is on; I am on folfiri + avastin. I began losing my hair after the 2nd or 3rd treatment + it began growing back around treatment 9 or 10. When I mentioned it to my onc, she said it may come go; however mine has continued to grow + is now at a decent length. When I started to lose my hair I was upset at first, but then it started to not bother me. I just wore scarves + hats, now bare head. Take good care.

    Thank you - i'm trying to help him. He is afraid that I will be mad at him if he loses his hair. But he is still the same man I married 11 years ago, with or without hair. It will just take some getting used to.
    Yes, I am proud of his recovery with this awful disease - he was dx'd stage 4 and still is now - but maintenance chemo is every 3 weeks now instead of every 2 weeks, which gives us some more time to travel and well "just" be cancer free for a while. He is the love of my life and I will do whatever it takes to get him through this, cause i'm not willing to give him up to cancer, no way - cancer will just have to find another highway to travel. LOL !

    Try this
    When hubby is napping, put on some really RED lipstick and kiss that bald head of his!

    Sounds like he is very lucky to have such a warrior as you on his side.

    Bald is beautiful and a small change indeed if it means that cancer is in abatement.

    I just talked with my husband about this. Since I lost most of my hair on FOLFOX and you normally don't lose it on that, I'm pretty sure it is going to go with FOLFIRI. Someone told me today that by round 2 they lost it all, including eyelashes and brows.

    He assured me that he will still love me. I'll just be his tall bald wife, but I'll still be me.

    I just got my hair cut short for the first time in my life, and it really wasn't as big of an adjustment as I thought. Next step might be bald. But at least I'll be bald and alive! I'd rather be bald than deal with more neuropathy or some other issues. And if I can be alive without hair, or dead with it, I choose life!

    Could be worse
    The good thing is your hubby is still alive and kickin. As a bald guy myself just make sure your hubby wears hats when he goes outside. A sunburned head is the worst. I would like to have my hair back, not for vanity, but you just don't realise how much it protects your scalp.
