After being on several different chemos, due to various side effects - I am now on Taxol.
After taking several doses - I seem to have mouth sores. Tolerable, but my Oncologist feels it may not be the chemo.

Has anyone experienced mouth sores while taking Taxol. I've checked the side effects online and just like several other drugs, mouth sores is one(but at the bottom of the list)

Thanks for any input you can give me.

To all my friends - stay well and try and be upbeat.

Nan

    help find old thread
Nan, hopefully someone will remember a thread about 6 months ago on mouth sores. I think they're not uncommon with taxol, though my mother's case (when on taxol/carbo) was mild. She used Biotene mouth rinse several times a day, and it helped. I put that title on this message in hope that someone will re-suggest a magic potion (prescription) that worked when nothing else would when they had trouble. I don't have time to look up the thread right now, so sorry...

    Can anyone help out here?

    mouth sores
I had mouth sores from Doxil. My oncologist gave me script for an oral rinse. It worked quickly and I used it at the start of any soreness. Is your doctor resistant to writing you a script? In the mean time you and use baking soda and water to make a paste. Brush that over your gums and tongue after every meal and at bedtime. Honestly, the bakingsoda paste really didn't relieve the soreness but it did make my teeth white.

Ask your doctor for an oral rinse.

    No mouth sores
I never experienced mouth sores, but before I started receiving chemo a naturopath recommended that I suck on ice while receiving the taxol infusions. This is supposed to reduce the blood flow to the mouth tissues while the concentration of the drug is high. I always followed this advice.

I want to thank you for your help in giving me info regarding mouth sores. I had very bad mouth sores when I was on Gemsar, Doxil, etc. My Dr. prescribed a "magic mouthwash" and a strong pain killer. It worked.

This time my mouth sores were not that severe and my Dr. wanted me to see an Ear, Nose and Throat man, which to tell you the truth - I was scared. As I'm sure you could understand I thought I had oral cancer. I spent a horrible week-end until I saw this ENT dr.

Thankfully, the result were good. It was not oral cancer. It had nothing to do with the
chemo. It had to do nerves, stress, etc., I was biting my tongue, when I slept, and am noticing that when I sneeze I do that. He said it was a very common occurance and should get a nite guard. I feel like I'm a teenager wearing braces.

My Dr. has mentioned to me many times not to go on the internet and look up all the side effects and diagnosis myself, which I did.

Now I can rest easy - but I now have insomnia. Oh well I guess that goes with the territory.

Thank you again for your help and am sorry that I seem to be rambling on about my problem.

I had the worst case of mouth ulcers (about 12 of them, each the size of a pencil eraser) when my son was deployed to Iraq. My doctor tested me for everything under the sun. It was just stress. I imagine Cancer/chemo could do the same thing. The "magic mouthwash" worked great!
