Trach Removed

I had My trach removed last monday, and was so glad, a few things that have come up, the hole healed in my neck, but now feels tight, i amd stretching my neck to get some relief, which seems to help, I also have noticed , my breathing gets shallow, and I need to mention my Left side of my larynx is paralyzed, we have no idea what brought this on, but this is where the tumor was located. Everything else came out clean, and no tumor to be found, I had to mention anything to the doctor, for recomending the trach to be put back in, I have fought hard to get rid of the beast. If anyone has had a trach removed, could you please tell me the aftermaths or what i should be expecting, I don't go back to the doctor for another 5 weeks, almost feels like a sinus cold,.Thanks Dennis

    Please remember that only you have the final authority about medical procedures on your body. Too often doctors say "We are going to have to replace the trache" when the appropriate thing for a doctor to say is "I highly recommend that we replace the trache."

    Out with the beast..
    Hi Dennis, Happy to hear that damned tube is gone and I really hope forever. Re the sinus cold feeling, I get that a lot, esp in the evenings. I think maybe related to the damaged Salivary glands and the effect on the production of the mucus/saliva in that area so you get that 'sinus cold' feeling. My Doctors haven't even blinked when I mentioned it = they have 'NO' idea.

    Dennis, I am going to take a different point of view here. I think you ought to get back to the doctor right away. From your description, I am scared you might be having some scar tissue forming with accompanying swelling around it. The paralyisis might be from the pressure of the swelling on the nerves in that area (or it might just be from cut nerves when the trach was put in). You mentioned shallow breathing, but I don't know if you mean that is natural or you cannot get a deep breath. I may be just worry wart, but I am concerned that your air way is constricting.

    It feels like the trach hole sealed, but very tight, I can breath, and when I sit I'm ok, I hear still alot of gurggling, and throat congestion, I don't know, I will call Doctor today, and I hope he rechecks it this week, it started out fine till the hole started to close, tight. I knew there where going to be aftermaths without the trach, Understand why this is so hard to fix???? Thanks for everyones input, Dennis

    Dennis, i have read most of your posts.

    My wife fought like hell to have the trache removed. She did this because , it was closed for about a months and had no function except for "in case she might need it again" .
    One Doctor agreed to remove it the rest were against.I understand their concern, buti doubt the docs really understand the feeling of being choked by a trache.
    There concern was basically that of what Charles55 talked of; restricted airways, which could potentially be lethal as there is no other access. However she did it and her breathing is fine and continues to be fine.

    I never give advise ever, but if youre having breathing difficulties , i think u should check it out. Know that you always have the right to decide what steps to take or not.

    I called the doctor and they finally got back to me yesterday, they wanted me up there pronto, good news, air waves open and everything looks great, he said allergys have kicked in and sent me home with some flo nez...phew, i can rest with ease, i will always have the shallow breathing due to my left side larnyx dead, but my vocal improves and the trach is gone...he really relieved me and I left in agood frame of mine, what a relief. A couple of notes to tell everyone, holding your nose and being able to breaththrew your mouth is a sure test of open air waves, also when a trach is removed the hole will not seal, it's telling you there is a air flow problem which is keeping the hole open, wanted to share this with you. Last but not least, think of me, my day was saddened as my father passed away, he lived a great life of 93, and I will be gone for a fewdays his 2 sisters are still alive, 96, and 99 and sill driving...Take Care Everyone.     So glad to hear the better news and I know you are glad to have your doctor reassure you. To be short of breath and feeling like it can't be relieved is an absolutely panic.

    I happy that you are feeling better. Yet sorry for the loss of your father. It is dificult to lose a parent at any age.

    My condolences to you and your family on the passing of your Father, but was a blessing to live to be 93. my dad passed at 85 all the best my friend and God be with you in your healing

    It's funny, when i make that long drive home, I will be seeing relatives I haven't seen in 10, 15 years, even school chums who knew our family, but the strange thing is, they all know about my cancer and have been keeping in contact with my family back in Michigan, where i was raised, and hear it down here, in Tennessee from my brothers up there, looking forward to seeing alot of people and showing them that cancer didn't take me. The hard part is my brother didn't make it, and his wife remarried, but still is considered part of our family. Happy and Sad Tears, I'm going home, My Dad is reunited with my Mother, deceased brothers, and family...Later all, be safe this holiday weekend, Dennis

    your news about your Dad Dennis. It's been a rough year for you man - but it seems things are on the up and you are starting to recover now now the horrid Trach is gone.

    Hey Bro, I am sorry to hear about the loss of your dad I lost mine in 2004 to the beast (Cancer) he was only 59. So I think your dad had a good long life! I am glad for you that you got your trach out. I think the paralysis is from the radiation; but that just my opinion. Keep up the fight! Your brother in arms!
